electronic ignition

What are the advantages of fitting one please apart from not having to adjust the timing thereafter and if worth doing which model is recommended for a series 2 V8

Thanks

Hi there.

I have fitted a electronic ignition kit from Aldon Automotive in my 74 3500S. It was straightforwards to fit, hides entirely inside the distributor, and hopefully saves me the chore of adjusting the points in future.

However, the kit requires a 12v coil, which I also purchased from Aldon. A new ignition feed bypassing the ballast resistor has to be fed to the new coil.

I have not noticed any performance improvement myself, but hopefully will see increased reliability in the long run.

hope this helps!

Hi,

One of the well regarded kits is Lumenition Optronic, available from JR Wadhams et al. I know several people who have fitted this, and all have said it is excellent. It is not cheap though, about £130 to £150.

Main advantages are it does away with points wear, points bounce, distributor spindle wear etc., and gives a stable dwell angle for the ignition timing. If you have ever tried to set the dwell angle on an old distributor, you would have seen the amount of variation there can be.

Lumenition also do a magnetic version if you prefer that type. I'm about to fit the Optronic type to my own car.

Cheers,

Dave.

Electronic is the way to go! My V8 used to eat points, and after being caught in Sydney rush hour with a sick car something had to be done. I forked out for the Pirahna optical setup and fitted it myself in an afternoon.
Total cost was A$320, and I never had another problem. I put over 110,000 miles on the system and it never went out of tune!
The newer systems are supposed to be even better, and less noticable than a big black box under the bonnet.
I cannot recommend an electronic ignition setup enough, especially if doing huge miles like I was, or even for ease of mind when leaving the car for long periods. :)

Interesting topic.
Does anyone know if the different types have different advantages. For example, will both the optical (luminition) and magnetic (aldon) types of electronic ignition both combat distributor spindle wear?

I fitted the Pirhana optical system 12 years ago and it's been totally reliable. I put the "black box" at the front nearside to keep it cool and I remember it as being very easy to fit.

Fitting electronic ignition to a knackered dizzy is a complete waste of time.

For not too dissimilar prices, I would look at a brand new OE Dizzy, a Mallory dual point dizzy or even better, EDIS.
