Electronic ignition Rover P6 3500 V8

Bought a Powerspark pick up and reluctor wheel ignition conversion kit whilst at the Classic Car and Restoration Show at the NEC for a very reasonable £38 .
Worked fine, until the car got reluctant to start especially when cold, as if the timing was too advanced.
When I investigated I realised that the vacuum advance was not connected to the baseplate as the pin or recessed screw was missing.
So browsing on here I saw posts about a Powerspark replacement distributor and coil, apparently based on the SD1 V8 distributor with the amplifier on the side of the distributor.
EBay, £179 later and a wait for a couple of days and it arrived.
Duly did all the usual, set engine to TDC, marked position of rotor arm and oil drive etc after removing distributor.
Fitted new unit and coil, wiring in the two wires from the supplied plug to the indicated position on the coil.
Fired up 1st go !! Happy days..
Err no, if you revved the engine it would cut out. Checked timing dynamically, checked fuel mixture via exhaust gas analyser all good.
Took it for a road test as the engine warmed up, under part throttle the red fine would stutter and try to stall.
Back to my garage where I repaired my original distributor, refitted it and the original coil and no stuttering or cutting out.
Any ideas why the new distributor was doing this?
Obviously it’s being returned.
