dynamo

Would you believe it? Christmas and Rovers dynamo (what I call a generator) stops working indicated by a brightly glowing ignition light, well I fitted a supposedly rebuilt genny which failed to produce enough volts 11v at idle 13v on the motorway 11v at night. I am assuming the regulator needs adjusting as it is charging during the day but I don't have the necessary skill or gauges to reset it. So this means daylight use only until Auto Sparks start back at work.

Hi John Where did you take the readings from the battery or the back of the Alternator?

Hi, Is it actually a dynamo or an alternator? If it's a dynamo it's likely to be a C40 which produces 22Amps so it's not difficult to 'overpower' with demand, it even with lights, heater and wipers on at once, even a C45 only produces 25A so only marginally better. One of the smaller 15 acr alternators will provide 35A.

The Rover 2000 was fitted with a C42 high output generator. They were set up to put out 30 A. Some for police use were regulated to 35 A. Testing on the bench they will put out 45 A but I would not recommend running them that high for a long period.

It might have the more common 22A RB 340 control box fitted. There are a lot of these around, they were used a lot on Ford tractors. They can be turned up to 30 A but it might be better to find an original. The reproduction control boxes are not that reliable.

The other thing to check is the brush springs in the generator. If the brushes have been replaced and you restore output of the generator by hitting it with a hammer then it means the springs need replacing. Having to take to you generator every 20 miles with a hammer is inconvenient and eventually you will crack the housing. When replacing brushes the springs should always be replaced in my opinion, they only cost a few dollars. So check what was done to the generator.

One other problem area that I have encountered is where the wires connect to the control box. A couple of times my light has come on and all I had to do was clean up the connectors and then all was good.

Hi and thanks. Attached is a pic of Grey Rover .
The generator is a C42 and was run up (momentarly) to 40 amps and the regulator is a RB340 which is what i suspect is wrong. so I will take it to my favourite auto sparky as soon as he is back I can use it during the day ok.
Cheers.
