Dutch Rover V8 "4600" - (former 2200TC topic)

The ignition coil is brand new, as is the power module on the electronic ignition, so those parts are working as they should.

I don't think that you should make assumptions like this. Try to substitute one by one with known to work items, not just new, and you might be surprised!

That's very true indeed. Makes me question what I've measured on both of the coils! What kind of resistance would I be measuring over the two different leads in the coil? I measured both the old and the new one, and the ohmage was the same. It was different from the rough guideline I found in a general car-electrics book, but since they were exactly the same I figured they both were okay...

Excellent work on the Morris by the way! :D

Finally!

Ran down the wiring once again and discovered some nasty things...

Spent a lovely hour cramped up in the back of my Rover, trying not to burn myself with liquid metal... The result however, was perfect... All the electrics are working perfectly! :D

Motivated I started cutting up isolation material to cover up the propshaft covers in my interior:

All looking good! 8)

Je gaat toch niet door kabels slijpen he? yes I told him do not grind throught this cables grinn.

Ik ga ook beginnen met een project maar ben er nog niet uit. I do also go start a project but I am not yet confinced how to do that, this because I have
a limited budget, but tons of time what is good...

Dat is al een tijdje geleden Kees, al die punten zijn opnieuw gesoldeerd en netjes geïsoleerd. :) Wat er nu speelt met de auto bezorgt me echter wel heel wat kopzorgen, geen idee wat het probleem is...

(That's quite some time ago Kees, fixed all those wiring problems adequatly. What's wrong with the car right now I just don't know, haven't got a clue what the problem is.)

Hoy Thijs

English cars have a reputation of not so good electrical cabling, connectors and such are oxidated
in much cases, I do have that experiance with a V8 rover couple years ago, just a
schematic and follow it and repair/cleaning connectors will help, be aware of earth
connections.

Can you tell me what the problems are you play with?

regards

Righto. Did some further diagnosing on the ignition system. The ignition coil is working, the power module and optic switch from the electronic ignition are working. That part of the 'creating-of-a-lively-spark' is working as it should!

I took a closer look at the solenoid, it's fitted on top of the starter motor in my car. When I measure the amps going over it, it should give a reading of 4-6A. but I'm getting 0. The starter motor is still working though. Is the solenoid in this car part of the ignition system? It is in my Dad's Lotus, but that's a different kind of solenoid, mounted apart from the starter motor with a lot more wiring going on...

So the question is. Can the solenoid be the problem? No spark, but the start motor is working as it should. :)

Hi Thijs,

Certainly on the V8, the solenoid is part of the ignition system. I know that yours is a 4 pot, but I imagine that the same principle applies.

Inside there is a coil spring around a cylindrical metal rod, and a latch at the end. Sometimes the solenoid will stick, so giving it a tap with a hammer or something equally suitable will do the trick.

Ron.

Since I won't be at the car before the weekend I've just given my dad permission to hit my car with a hammer... Let's see how this ends!

Man oh man, it has been a while! My Rover has been in storage since december 2015 and since has only run once to be moved to a different garage. She started right up, after 1.5 years of sitting. Didnt even have to charge the battery!

Why did I store the Rover you might ask? It had some issues I wasnt fully able to resolve at the time begin. Due to a lack of time and working space, but mostly due to a lack of motivation and funds. I quite recently finsihed university and now that I'm working the funds problem is slowly but surely resolving itself. The motivation part, well since I'm posting here again you could conclude that I'm interested in the old girl again!

There are a couple of issues that will need sorting out before I can get her on the road again, but in the long run she will need major major major work... First of:
- Run through all the electrics. The headlights aren't working right now but the electrics of this car always have been rather... bad.
- Rebuild the carbs. They're leaking and old, probably never been touched.
- Give the engine a good tune up. Change the distributor, spark-plug cables and pulgs themselves. Set the valves, change the filters, change the fluids etcetera
- Check the braking system. Part of it I already did (rebuild the master cylinder and install a refurbished calliper) but it will need a good going through for the MOT
- Fix the shifting linkage. A common P6 problem, but I've never been able to shift my car properly. Eventually I would like a 5-speed in it, but for now just making it shift will do the trick.

Well, plenty to do! Don't know when and what I'll tackle first, but we'll see. Might start up by removing the carbs and rebuilding them since it's a workbench job, not too big a problem to handle and generally rather satisfying. Are there any full-service kits for the SU's on the P6 out there? :)

The good part about this car is the base unit, which has had extensive welding done to it a couple of years ago. It's a solid car and a good starting point!

Thanks Benlaro, it really is. All the brightwork is in excellent condition and the paint overall isnt bad at all. There are some minor bubbles on a couple of the panels, but she looks just fine. The interior needs some TLC first, when we're looking at cosmetics. The front seats are torn in different places and the soft filling isnt that soft anymore... After she's running properly again that's the first thing I'll be sorting out! The rear seats are in pretty good condition!

Im curious how many P6 there are in Holland, i have seen a few around here, and i think i have seen two on the road since i bought mine last year.

Good question. On the Rover Owners Club website it states that in 1997 (how very up to date!) there were 239 members with a P6, but that's just members of the club... I don't have a clue how many are on the road nowadays! Where in The Netherlands do you live Ben? :)

I live in Noordwijkerhout, in zuid Holland a few miles away from where you are living according to youre profile.

I am rebuilding our P6 completely, for taking part in the Tulpenrally this year.
Rebuild the engine, put a manual gearbox in the car, renewing the paintjobs, renewing all the seals.
Renewing the interior and so on.

just got the new radiator in today, so i can take care off al the cooling.

Today I tackled the firs job on my list, removing the carburators.

All went smoothly and the carbs are now resting on the workbench. Will order a service kit for them this weekend and then I can crack on with that! Noted a lot of things that need sorting out whilst removing the carbs, but that will come at a later point. :)

Ah, really cool! That's a major event. Will you run it in original form or will there be some modifications?

Hey Pepijn!

Right now the car still is in the garage box... But there has been some progress! Good you've pushed this thread up, gives me a reason to post some more.

Last year I pulled the engine, which is now sitting on an engine stand next to the car. I'm planning on fully re-gasketing it anyway, but I'm still indecisive if I shouldn't get it fully rebuild. It'll cost a few euro's, but since I'm not planning on ever selling the car...

The carbs have been rebuild and are sitting on the shelf.

Apart from that I quite recently aquired a lot of parts for a very good price! A full black leather interior which is cleaning up just lovely. A set of good P6 Rostyles which will look great on the car. And last but not least an array of NOS suspension parts and rebuild kits for the brakes, clutch etc... Quite the score!

Here some pictures of hauling the interiors out of some of his cars, and the first cleaning and caring results. Sadly I haven't taken any pics of the Rostyles or other parts.

The pulling:

Really dry leahter...

Not so dry leather, check the difference!

The plans for the Rover? Firstly, rebuild my Royal Enfield which is in need of big maintenence. Since that's a smaller project (both time and money-wise) I'm tackling that first, just recently gave my Moto Guzzi V35 Imola a big overhaul as well. After the Enfield is running again, the work on the Rover wil commence!

wow sounds like a good score!!! If you want to sell the black interior....... I will buy it from you. My black interior is sadly pretty bad and I am thinking to get them rufurbished. Meaning new leather and so on. which is quite expensive......
