Dutch Rover V8 "4600" - (former 2200TC topic)

I mentioned that earlier in the thread, but it was tested and fluid flowed fine, I think "Gushed" was the word :D

I did bleed the system, there is no air left since the brake pedal isn't spungy, but nice and firm.

If the overhauled caliper is working as it should, then it's been incorrectly set up when it was refitted to the car. Did you check it was working before fitting?
I would say you need to drop the discs off again, disconnect the handbrake cable at the calipers, and then manually operate the handbrake quadrants until the discs just slide in between the pads with the caliper at rest. No excess free play, but no binding either. Then refit the handbrake cable ensuring that the handbrake quadrants on the calipers don't move off their stops. You should be able to tell whether the calipers are working properly as you manually operate them.

I think this is most likely the case... I did 'set' the caliper manually using the hand brake, as told by the Dutch P6 specialist (Smink), but perhaps I didn't set it close enough to the disc. There should be as little free play as possible? I think there's about 1-2 mm right now, you can actually tilt over the caliper just a tiny bit.

Yes, you need to get the pads as close to the discs as possible, but not so close that they bind. If you adjust it up using the handbrake, with the discs in place, you'll never get it as good as if you operate the quadrants manually while sliding the disc in and out.

Finally got her MOT'ed! :D

Now I can start gradually improving her over time... To be continued. 8)

well done :D at least now you can enjoy driving her and you wont even mind doing the rest great :D

Thanks guys!

@Hans:

Groeten,

Kees

A point that needs improving: the cooling system.

Drove her up to a classic car meeting, about 100kms of highway and noticed that the temperatur rose every time I did a lot of revs. Whenever I'm doing some more rpm's, over 3000 or something in that region, the temperature of the engine quite rapidly goes towards 100 degrees.

The thermostat on this car is brand new, all the hoses look good, there is enough coolant which you can see being pumped around and the fan seems to do it's job just fine...

What could this be? :)

Checked the radiator, it gets hot all over. The lower parts are a bit cooler than the upper parts, but they get warm nonetheless. I figured this could be because the fan is located on the lower half of the radiator?

Could it be the sensor...? The temperature changes seem to be quite unexpected and occuring at different rpm's, or not at all. Was driving at 4000rpm in second to check it out, nothing. Driving at 2000rpm in fourth and the temperature went up to nearly 100 and dropping as soon as I took my foot of the throttle.

That's how it should be, the rad gradually cools the coolant as it moves it's way downwards and across from the entry point at the top to the exit at the bottom. No cold spots mean that there aren't any totally blocked areas not doing any cooling.

Changing the guage sender unit is an easy option, and if it turns out not to be the case at least you then have a spare.

Nothing much to work on currently, she's running lovely! There is a small leak in the cooling system, located at the thermostat housing. Will fix that once she's going into 'winter-mode', e.g. stalled under the carport of my parents. :) This winter I will tackle some things that need improving, all small bits and pieces.

Meanwhile...

Famous last words Thijs :D

Glad to hear she's running well, she certainly looks well.
