Door to wing vertical seals

have just bought some rubber seals that go between the doors and the wings. In the original or what's left of them they are secured to the aliuminium strips which are riveted to the doors. Question is how have people fitted the new rubbers to the aliu strips. Originally they were stapled (or they were on my car). I don't have a stapler capable of stapling through the aliuminium, If I'm carefull I can save the staples to reuse but when the rubber is on you can't see the holes to punch them back through the rubber seal. How have people dont this before.

The staples are .048" wire (approx 16 gauge), and the holes are on .5" centres. I made new staples by hand (a bit of a pain, I filed up a little block with a slot to make them nice and square. Block needs to be .450 thick.) You need 36 staples.

If you use a sharp awl, you can fold back one of the new rubber's flaps and poke the awl through the holes int he alum and through one side of the rubber. You can use those marks to push the awl through the other way, and then poke the staple through the holes you've made.

Rockdemon did his (I seem to remember) with some stainless wire.

If you use silicone, don't use the acetoxy type (smells like vinegar) as it will corrode the aluminium.

if the seals were previously glued, mine are now in tatters but I have the new ones (arrowed), what's the best stuff to use to get rid of the previous glue and clean up the wing where the new seals will go?

Cellulose thinners seems to clean up virtually everything, BUT don't use it near reasonably new paint!

For cleaning the wing ends, I've found some T-Cut worked in with a small stiff brush gives a good result.
