door hinges and overiders

Hi all, hope all is well. i need some help or answers please.
I have made good progress putting the doors back together with one to go (the front passenger) and one sd1 rim to clean up and paint.
Then acelerator linkages to reassemble,as had heater out to refurbish, new oil and filter, and oh, fresh benzine and hopefully after 3/4 years well be back on the road.
What i would like to know please, does there need to be a minium of one shim under the hinge/body of the car or can i not have one fitted,as the door seems to stick out from the door opening too much. i hadnt noticed this before dismantling, so cant say for sure this was this way when i purchased it. I have removed two (top and bottom) already.
I havent adjusted the hinges on the actual doors, so assume they in their original placement.
Also the overiders on the rear bumper i removed a while ago and i see the should be "upside down" compared to the front, as on most p6bs on the internet, but not all i see.
is this correct?
I have a couple more questions, which i will post under the v8 eingine threads.
Thanks in advance for any help, Karl

Hi, You add or remove as many shims as necessary to get a good alignment, if it doesn't require any, that's what you go with.

The over riders are different front to rear, on the front the bulk is below the bumper line and on the rear it's above. The cut out is shaped to go on the bumper accordingly.
