Dodgy gearstick.

Hi.Looking to you helpful people for some advice.I was out in my Rover 2000 today and the gearstick seems to have come away.Won’t let me select any gears and is just flopping about.Have been recovered home but now need to get it sorted.Any advice appreciated.
kind regards
Tony Jenkins.

Hi Tony,

Are we talking manual or automatic? I am not familiar with the arrangement of the manual gear stick, but in the auto (certainly in the 3500) there is a nylon cup that the gearstick sits in. These cups sadly don't last as long as we would like and when they fail the gear lever flops about all over the place, just as you describe.

You need to remove the tunnel finisher first - remove ashtrays (squeeze the bits at the sides inwards),undo the bolts at front and rear, 2 horizontal screws into the speaker surround, one hidden vertical screw under a flap at front of handbrake boot. Remove speaker griller and speaker; lubricate handbrake handle - ease finisher fwd into speaker hole, persuading handbrake boot over the handle. Now you can see the state of the soft plastic cup that the lever sits in. Check the pics in the manual for the way its mounted.

Thanks very much for the replies.I had a go yesterday before the rain started. All went well until I tried to remove the 3 bolts. Two no problem but the 3rd was just spinning so will scratch my head and start again on Wednesday

Which 3 bolts do you speak of ? The 3 holding the alloy part above the lever ball screw into a plate without nuts , so none of them should spin unless stripped - try turning and pulling at same time. Or do you refer to the 3bolts holding the finisher down? Could be a captive nut underneath loose?

Sounds like the captive bolt head is loose. Try pulling the end of the bolt up as you try to turn the nut, or clamp it with small vise grips from the side. A tiny bit of some penetrating type fluid into the nut thread may help.

Thank you

Thanks all.All removed now just awaiting parts.Spherical bush was shot.Third bolt was difficult to remove because a nut had been put on it and was just spinning.

I'm suffering the same problem. I have it down as my next job. ( carbs currently on the kitchen table) Thanks Taffy. Take a couple of snaps if you can!

Good luck.Doesn’t look difficult to be honest.Ordered the new bush and pin from Wadhams and treated myself to some new bolts and washers from Rimmer Bros.

NOTE that the diagram in the parts book does NOT show those parts in the correct order! There is a post elsewhere by Harvey listing the correct sequence.

Thank you.I have just put it back together after a bit of fiddling about and choice language. All gears seem to be selecting so just needs a new gaiter now as other one fell to bits.

Thanks all, ordering parts this week. Any idea where Harvey's post is ?
I'll be careful taking the gaiter off, they are not cheap.

Don’t know if you are aware his membership name is Harvey P6 and he is a prolific poster on the forum.Always helpful and knowledgeable.I am sure if you send him a message on his profile page he will assist you.Good luck with your car

Ok, not as daunting as it seems. Dumpy Phillips screwdriver(preferably magnetic), 13mm mini socket. Sitting in passenger seat. Out in 10 minutes. Just be careful not to break you speaker grille, little screws in there also. Now my Plastic Seat Bush appears to be Ok, I'll post a pic later, it's still in one piece, and still attached. Replaced probably, washers lying in the housing and one corner of the finisher broken, superglue needs redone.
I've got a later series car, it has the steel Acorn and after that nothing. Am I missing something?

Went out in mine yesterday to test it out.All good.A bit noisy as I have only just ordered a new gaiter.Had to stretch the bush over the steel ball to get the new pin to line up.I would think that if the plastic bush was stretched the ball would slip through it.

The seat bush appears to be ok, still very pliable. I think it was replaced in the not too distant past. There's a nice groove from when the last one failed I think. Only visible when I took the bush off. I put my fingers down the hole and could wiggle the rod inside. Is the problem deeper? Not sure.
