Distributor Cap Mystery

When I bought my Rover P6 2000 TC it had a seized engine, while it was soaking in diesel I set about buying new ignition parts for it, such as a new cap, points etc.

When it was unseized, these new parts and some fettling got it running a treat.

I have since sold the P6 and recently bought a Series 3 Land Rover 2 1/4 petrol that didn't have a cap at all but had a rotor arm.

Low and behold a bit of wire bushing revealed it was also a Lucas 25D4, basically the same unit as the P6 but no doubt modified to suit the engine as the model numbers were different and it was 8 years newer.

The rotor arm was identical to the old Rover P6 one, so I fitted the cap it and cranked it, it didn't fire and quick spot of testing revealed a spark at the king lead but not at the plugs.

I then removed the cap, inverted it and placed the rotor arm inside, low and behold a HUGE gap between the posts for the plugs and the end of the rotor arm.

Now although they are different models, the basic design is the same and the caps fit all Lucas 25D4 variants.

A fact confirmed by the Distributor Doctor.

All that I can think is that the wrong cap was placed on the P6 before I bought it, it wasn't wired up so it had not been ran for years, the cap was spotless inside so I presumed it had never been used.

My question is, does anyone know what cap it might be, there are no marking on it.

It fitted onto the distributor perfectly.

Its just an irritating loose end and its bothering me.

Can you help ?

Regards, Karl.
