Disposable gas cylinders

I have just started attempting to stick some new metal in to the inner wing on my Rover and have gone through 3 disposable gas cylinders on 2 small patches. I reckon I get about a dozen tacks done and about 3 inch of seam weld done and the bottles run out. I have the regulator turned right down so that the gas just comes out.
Is this normal?

my guess would be the regulator is shot?? I usually get a good 4 or 5 hours welding out of one...

or the swan neck? i cant remember but isnt it meant to switch off when the trigger isnt depressed?

The regulator is a couple of years old with no noticeable leaks. I'm now wondering about the whole tube if it has become porous as the machine must be 20 years or older, I got it second hand 15 years ago with a part used pub co2 cylinder which I used on my MG. I've asked at a couple of pubs to exchange it but they won't do it. :(

Try fire protection places instead. My local place charges a tenner a bottle and shows no interest in the make or date. It's also pure CO2 while some pub gas is a useless mix of CO2 and Nitrogen. Old CO2 fire extinguishers work too if you can find any being thrown out. Removing the funnel thing reveals a thread that's the same size as that on a large bottle.

Off topic and pretty much useless info, but the reason the head on Guinness is so luxurious
is down to them using Nitrogen instead of the usual CO2 in the dispensers. Makes for much
smaller bubbles.

get a no rent cylinder instead, i paid something like £50-75 one off deposit and £30 for a fill which lasts ages, when you consider the amount of gas and the cost of a disposable. i got mine from hobbyweld but alot of folks use adams gas

ive got a brand new regulator you can have for the cost of postage!

also ANYTHING to do with Guiness is never off topic

I rigged up an air supply to the gas pipe to see if I could find the leak.
It is leaking out the wire inlet

There is more escaping from this end than the nozzle, should there be a seal even though the wire goes through it?

Something is wrong there. The air should be in a separate line and only mix at the gun end.
There is a separate tube that routes the air to the gun and it only enters the picture in the
cup where the wire exits. The trigger usually controls the flow. I would say that you have a
fractured pipe within your torch assembly that is letting the gas leak into the outer shield.

If you are keen on that sort of thing, you could strip the assembly and replace the gas tube,
or just buy another torch assembly.

That's exactly what has happened, the little bit of black pipe sticking out the end of the brass part is the wire tube and is broken about 3" inside the gas tube.
One length of 4mm nylon pipe and everything OK :D
