Differential resilient mounts

I am replacing the differential and pinion extension mounts. I have new ones from JRW. These new ones are metalastic brand like the originals, but they are 8mm shallower in height and slightly smaller in diameter.

With these new mounts installed the rear of the diff will sit 5mm higher to the body and the pinion extension will sit 5mm lower from the body.

My questions are: 1.is this OK and 2. how will it effect the relationship of the propeller shaft and U-joints and also the drive shafts and U-joints?

If not OK should I then make some spacers up to bring the height of the new mounts to match that of the old mounts.

Cheers,

Craig

I'd make spacers to keep the diff in its original position. If it's 5mm higher at the rear and 5mm lower at the front that's 10mm over the length of the diff which is quite a lot.

The smaller mounts are fitted to earlier cars and are 1.375" long. Your originals were presumably the 1.7" long type which don't seem to be available any more. According to the original Rover workshop manual the two types are fully interchangeable PROVIDING they are changed as a complete set with all associated spacers, washers etc. There are some good close-up diagrams in the workshop manual with all the washers well-illustrated.

I hacked the centre out of the old mounts and cut them down to use as spacers

That's a great idea, I didn't think of that. I made spacers from steel washers and fitted these. I feel more comfortable knowing the diff will sit at the original level and height..
