"Did Mods own/drive cars ?"

I know in the 70's 80's some performers mimed but nothing like they do today, how many of the "pop stars" today will go onto tv and sing live, very very few if any. Bands were different in the 70's, they entertained as well, put on a show , didnt just put on smart casual clothes stand up or do a choreographed dance routine as today, we had something different from each band. Give me 70's 80's over todays anyday.

I love watching Jules Hollands show, you get some really good new stuff on there, and of course they're all doing it live.

If you're into soul music there are some really good new bands doing a good job of old fashioned soul. Raphael Saadiq, Aloe Blacc, Ben l'oncle Soul, all worth a listen.

but nothing like they do today
- on the miming front i think you're wrong... more prevalent then than now!

Styles change but some of today's bands put on fantastic shows, look at Muse, rodrigo et gabriella, nine inch nails, the darkness, the hives... There's loads...

Rich

my ma and pa went to see Aha when they first came out and demanded their money back as they were miming...

 !
 !

"Hairdryers"
"Lawn mowers"

The first time I am actually glad that this forum is going off topic !

.... !!!

As there were/are no Mods/Rudies/Skins that drive a Heinkel, I might not feel insulted - but HEY - the Tourist is THE most sophisticated hair - EERRRRRM SCOOTER !! there ever was, so BOY does that hurt me !!

Stefan, this thread has got me going on Youtube from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, through Northern Soul, Doo wop and ending up with Toots and the Maytals, so for that I thank you.

There's always good and bad music... 80s was full of mass produced stock aitken and waterman, and there's plenty of mass produced rubbish in the 60s and 70s too. In my mind the only 2 true periods the record industry didnt keep up were the late 60s/early 70s blues/rock/prog explosion, and the late 70s with punk and electronica. Aside from that i dont think music today is any better or worse than any time i could pinpoint?

Yes, but when I hear the mass-produced 80's music now, even that feels far superior to the music we have now.

I'm a late 80's/early-mid 90's club/dance music fan.

:D !!!!

Mr R/D , as a certain Mr McEnroe once said..." you cannot be serious" more miming in the 70's than nowadays. While it was done, never to the extent as today. Their have been complaints of artists miming at their concerts recently, never mind on tv. Even today artists like Bowie, Elton John, Rod Stewart etc do not mime on tv. It is accepted that today's " artists " all mime.

Me too Darth, there's plenty of sampling from then too 8) My ipod is very predictable :)

My daughter looks like she was teleported from the 80's with the trends all coming back round  Knew I should have kept my old wardrobe

Stefan, back on the topic, my older sister was 18 in 1966, her friends drove what their mothers drove, I remember a Triumph Herald convertible and an Austin A40. The boys drove old vans, Mini van, Austin A30, and one had a Morgan 3 wheeler, which was notoriously unreliable and my sister wouldn't get in it, as she was/is a "sturdy bird".

THANK YOU !!
I do like all the surrounding bits and pieces here very much, but I also love to learn more about the topic !

VANS, thats very "mod"
The mini vans were not considered too stylish in those days, right ?
As I would love to own a A30, I will not comment on that one !
A Herald Convertible !! That was stylish even then, of course, I don´t know about the A40 ? Nooooo ... .
And the Morgan ThreeWheeler - YES PLEASE !! - but more of a motorcycle, in my opinion, so maybe no good for the suits and dresses ... . Your sis was right, must have been a bit uncomfortable as well ... .

I am trying to remember whether I once saw a movie in which some Mods entered or left a Jaguar - could also have been your ordinary gangster, of course ... .

More memories ?

I think the perception portrayed by the media was everyone who was a trend setter drove either a Mini or Mini Moke, an E type Jag, or an Austin Champ with Union Jack paintwork. In reality people drove what they could afford, or they could borrow from their parents, much as the youth of today.

The ultimate Rover funketeer I know is Eamonn Burrell of the P4DG, the man is an expert on matters 1980's soul. Quite why he's a P4 man and not the owner of a Capri 3.0S with fishnet headrests I'm not quite sure :)

You must mean "arse-soul" as the 80's was dreadful for music
60's and 70's were the golden years for soul and I consider myself to be a bit of an expert
