Delayed wipers

After putting a flame trap on today I decided to have another look for the missing pipe to the delay unit for wipers .
I found it cut and hidden in the little wire loom for wipers so I cut the sheath back a couple of inches to reveal a longer piece of the pipe , the bit that the pipe should connect to on the delay unit is snapped off so used a football valve that slid snuggly into it and used a piece of screen wash pump pipe to connect .
Hey presto wipers now work on delay , it's a bit of a bodge but it's £65 cheaper than a new unit

Also took the fuel sender out again as it was sort of working after resoldering the tiny wire back onto its connection a few weeks ago, it registered about an 8th of a tank full when it had more.
Tested it manually out of tank while connected up and it seems fine but now its back on the car and has 5 gallons of fuel in it still reads 8th of a tank.
Am I missing something as I can't figure it out?
Cheers Russ

The lower part of the tank is the reserve bit and won't register on your gauge.

Try putting a few gallons in and see if it goes up

Looking at the pipe on the delay unit I can see the top fitting but what does the other end fit too. I don't have a pipe on mine and can only see the top fitting. Your pipe appears to go under the wiper bracket. I assumed this worked on a vacuum system from somewhere. Help please.

Hi Terry
It goes into the cabin to the steering coloum it is in the wiring loom .
There's a white knob on side of coloum that controls the amount of delay ( it should do when connected)

I don't recall seeing a white knob, but there are two knobs at the side where the clock is. There was a piece of black plastic pipe on the fitting on the delay unit so there may be a piece of black plastic pipe on the column somewhere. Thanks

Neither of the two knobs next to the clock are for the wiper delay. The top one resets the trip meter. I can't remember what the lower one does!
Look for a little white knob on the left side of the steering column, which should connect to the wiper mechanism via a hose.

The other one dims the dash lights

Thanks all, I'll have to get an owners hand book off Ebay or something. Got two workshop manuals already.

The wires for wipers are bound together to form a loom and the pipe is in the loom . I could not find mine as it had been cut at the end of the loom and I reckon this was done to hide the fact the wiper delay unit did not work . My car was full of bodges and poor quality repairs when I bought it.

Will bare that in mind when I start investigating. My car was owned for the last 29 years by a mechanic so I should either find some very good workmanship or high quality bodges. Hopefully not the latter.

Its more of a peg then a knob you will be looking for.
I re-routed the plastic pipe as mine had stress crack through out.
Unscrew the steering binnacle and the unit with the white peg should be there.

Thanks all, found the white knob thingy, how I didn't see that is beyond me. Also found the end of the broken pipe in the wire harness but will have to open the harness up a little to see how usable the end of the pipe is. I used to keep Tropical fish so have some air pipe left and plastic fittings that are used to join lengths of pipe together so I may be able to use it to effect a repair.

I wouldnt use the old 45yo plastic pipe ,even if it OE Rover. Take a sample to your local pipe merchant. they sell it by the truck load

I have a two inch piece of the old pipe and it's still very supple, I can double it over and put two ends together with no sign of any sort of cracking. It looks surprisingly new. Will keep your concerns in mind though.
