Decker seal

I have a new decker seal to replace the grotty old one. Does the decker panel have to come off to fit a new seal? Hopefully that and a new boot seal will cure the wet boot!
Thanks

Yes! A bit of a faff because you need to remove the fuel filler & then there are studs/height adjusters to release (small nuts underneath?).

I seem to recall it's fastened on by a line of small screws & metal strip on the underside of the decker. Those screws have a habit of resisting any attempt to move them...

Hi, As Phil says it's a bit of a faff and you may well rue starting it. Incidently it may not cure a wet boot because any water getting past the decker seal does not go directly into the boot. Check the forward studs are sealed and the gutter under the decker panel is not rusty and holed. Also check all the fuel filler seals are all good because that's an entry point to the boot and/or the tank.

I agree that water entry point into the boot is more often the studs and / or the fuel filler seals, rather than anything else. If the screws of the metal strips that hold the seal onto the decker are rusted and you have to drill and fit new screws, take care to retain the original position of the strips relative to the decker panel, otherwise the decker seal will not fit correctly. Guess how i know this!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to get a fuel filler seal too if I'm going to tackle this one. Perhaps I'd better to keep it covered up til the rainy season finishes......wonder when that will be then!

Hi Johnny, is this "decker seal" the flat rubber seal that fits on the body and runs around the boot opening and the boot seal then closes onto it when the boot is shut. If it is mine is getting hard and coming off in places. I bought a new one from J R Wadhams and waiting for some dry weather to fit it.

As I understand it the decker seal fits to the front of the panel behind the rear screen. (The decker panel). The others are boot seals.

The decker seal fits onto the decker panel, which is the panel behind the bootlid that the fuel cap goes through.

unfortuantly if you have a new repro decker seal it wont fit without kinking, the problem is they are made dead straight, and so kink and dont sit flat when you attach them to the panel. so if you can find a good used one they are a better fit, problem with used ones is they tend to shrink and leave a gap at the end, so its usually a loose loose situation

Disagree. I've got three brand new ones from Scott's Old Rubber, and they are correctly formed. As with anything, it all depends on where you get your parts from.

I also purchased a seal from Scott. It worked well. His are moulded to the correct shape. The other ones are extruded as a straight piece and then heated to get the curve. I initially tried one of these seals (Scott was temporarily out of stock). They just cannot get a tight enough curve into the seals to stop some rippling along the rear screen if they start with a straight extrusion. Stretching the seal helps but fitting the seal and keeping it stretched takes a lot of work. It can be done but the ones from Scott fit better and are easier to fit.
