De-dion tube oil

Hi guys. I am in the process of refitting my De-dion Tube bàck onto my 1972 P6 2000TC. When I removed it there was no oil in it and it looked like there hadn't been any in it for many years. I am going follow the rules and replace the oil with SAE20W as the book says. I am just wondering why there is oil in it as there doesn't seem to be a logical reason other than balance for the oil to be there. Anyone help me on that, please? Thanks muchly.

The oil is for lubrication. 20/50 engine oil is fine, it only needs 1/3 pint.
Many thanks for that. Just seemed strange as there is nothing to lubricate once the oil is in the tube as it is basically a sealed unit with no moving parts. I have read the tube on post 1974 models are greased rather than oil. I will be adding some updates to my project report later. Thanks again.

Hi, The De Dion tube rotates when the car goes round a corner, one wheel goes up and the other down. It also changes length as the drive shafts swing through an arc with suspension travel. Doing both at the same time.

post 74? mine is late 74 and no oil point so assume it has been filled with grease? the seal (rubber joint) has been replaced by a previous owner so hopefully he checked that out at same time.

Thanks, Colin. That explains a lot. Cheers, mate. :)

just a thought, where exactly does the oil or grease go?
inside the boot area ? if so, what keeps it there?
is there a reservoir inside the boot to fill?
not much detail in the workshop manual....

Morning Peter. There is a filler hole at the top of the De-dion Tube as it sits between the elbows. remove that bolt to fill it. There is an inner and outer casing to the tube which is where the oil goes. Both ends of the tube are sealed so the oil cannot leak out. As you can see from past replies to my thread I found out on here what the tube actually does. If you look back to colnerov's reply he states how it works. Hope this help you, Peter?
