Finally got the brakes sorted on my S1, drives safely now. Using it as a daily car and it does seem a tiny bit underpowered, gets up to fifty mph, according to the orange strip, but doesn't really want to go any faster, not that I want to drive fast all the time but overtaking sometimes is required. Anything I should check as I considered that the brakes binding at the front might have been the issue?

Brakes did bind, has made some positive difference to the driving, will get onto the compression testing and the service manual, thanks.

Don't discount the speedometer itself as the cause. I had a 3500S that wouldn't even get to 70mph, well according to the speedo anyway. When my mate was driving it and I was following him down the motorway, he was trying to get up to 70mph, and I was clocking 110mph trying to keep up with him....

I changed the speedo head, problem solved.

I drove a 1965 2000 many years ago & was very underwhelmed at its performance, to the degree that I wasn't expecting my long term project 2000 to be any good at all.

However, now that my car is roadworthy it is certainly no sluggard, being a nimble & nippy drive. It has a fully rebuilt engine, carb etc though, so the earlier experience was probably down to the engine being out of tune or warn.

I'd try a good service & proper set up of the carb & timing. Possibly a compression test wouldn't go amiss either. Hopefully you'll be surprised at the results ;)

I find it hard to believe you didn't know the difference 110mph in a P6 is noisy and the steering goes light.

The tappet clearances make a significant difference in the performance of a 4 cylinder. Also make sure that the camshaft is not retarded due to wear on chains and gears. This is relatively easy to adjust.

Thank you, I will gen up on this and get it driving better. I might need the experience of a decent mechanic in the Northampton area if any body knows of one?

I had a 2000 Auto but took it back to the garage and told the salesman that I could only get it up to 75 on Acorn Hill. He said it was quite impressive as Acorn Hill was very steep, then asked what the problem was. I told him that I lived at 87.
Ha ha, it's the way you tell 'em !
