Custom Anti Roll Bar- Cheap opportunity!

Remember that the step from hex to round needs a much bigger radius on the bar from Steve, I did mine myself but I cannot see a problem with changing the spec at source.

Graeme, from my measuring up I believe your bar has to be thinner than 24mm. With a 23mm OD close fitting pipe over my stock bar I can only just slide it past the top mount central reinforcing rib, it is nearly touching. 24mm would almost certainly contact. Your bar's main thickness seems to clear no problem, hence my thinking it's actually perhaps a 23mm?
Anyway I'm going back to my idea of the transition being used to clear this rib. Hopefully get it machined this week.

Hmmm ok. Didn't mean to undermine you, I thought you had perhaps been working on an assumption of diameter you were told originally..
I just can't see how that could work on my car however so will go with 10mm more hex to make sure
Jim

Really isn't a lot of room for free play when it is installed but there is no contact areas.
Perhaps you have a thicker coating of underseal?
The bar was bought as a 24mm bar and it says that on the invoice but to be sure for my self I measured it, I know that By'Gone had at one time played with a 25 or inch bar but that they had problems with bars failing.

Graeme

I can concurr with GHCE - Graham . I have the same bar from ByGone Auto's and it is a 24mm bar . Very snug fit in situ , nothing scraping or bangin about whilst driving . As G suggests - perhaps your underseal is a little proud .

Interesting..no under seal on the mounts anymore but I will give them a quick wire wheeling today just to make sure it's not rust built up.
The only other thing I can think of is I'm working with the suspension at full droop as the car is all 4 off the floor, but that shouldn't make a difference as it would touch under certain driving conditions..
Thanks guys, I'm sure you can appreciate my cautiousness as I only want to machine it once
Jim

Curioser and curioser, the other side had more clearance..
Looking more closely I realised the casting flash was prouder on the tight side. I've since cleaned it up and smoothed it and now both sides are equal. The way it was a 24mm bar would have locked up against it.

Hi, I ordered my bar from Steve last Tuesday and collected it on Friday. I recommend if you can to go in person and if Peter is around, you'll get a tour of the machine shop. These places decades ago were all around the Midlands and they are fascinating for anyone with a interest in engineering. Anyway, I directed Steve to this thread and I asked him to put more gentle transitions and this is the result.

I know he's made three bars this week.... Note the bar was perfect as received any paint chipping is a joint effort between Easyjet and myself. I don't recommend carrying one as hand baggage....

I look forward to your feedback on handling once fitted.

Quick question. Anyone got the exact spec of the high tension bolts? I'll order a new set.

Also the torque settings? - Answered that one 30lbft (Rover Classics)

5/16 x 1 1/2 UNC Bolts and 5/16 spring washers

Not sure what level of hardening but my limited understanding is that all UNC were hardened ...??? but there is no way I would believe that without independent research.

Hi,

I think from memory they are UNF not UNC, we use capscrews, a little harder to fit but you do tend to get a better quality of screw.

Spoke to my local machine shop guy today and he's quoted £60 for the machining which is roughly what I thought and hoped it would be. I'll get it done over the next week, brings my bar's total cost to £90.
For me that's a very useful extra £40 I can spend elsewhere on my build, plus I get the design I prefer.
