Crankcase pressurisation V8

As a new member I would like to offer members a cure for the above, which is the bane of a V8 engine, as you all know. I cured mine by inserting two Wells PCV 76 one-way valves; one into the O.S.F BREATHER PIPE 603518 and another into the N.S.F. BREATHER PIPE 603517. I must have done a couple of thousand miles now and the engine is not now covered in unsightly oil. Perhaps fitting one to the 2000 unit could be a cure. Hope this helps, because I have enjoyed and learnt from reading the Forum. Alanj.

Dear ethelred,

You are very welcome , glad to be of help. I bought my two from Real Steel , Middlesex tele no. 01895 440505 Part no. BYFV184 @ £2.45P EACH which I thought was a cost effective fix for such an annoying , well known problem. I have no connection with the company.

Best regards,

Alanj.

I've never really had any problems with crankcase pressure but I did fit a PCV valve into the N/S rocker cover

I did this just to keep the inside of the engine cleaner.

Isnt this usually rings that are on the way out if everything is unblocked as it should be?

That is certainly my understanding Rich.

Warn rings allow an increase in "blow by", thus resulting in an increase in crankcase pressure.

Provided the breather filter is fitted in the correct way, the flame traps, their hoses and respective attachment points at both carburettor and rocker cover are clear, then oil should not normally emanate from seals etc.

The genuine flame trap hoses are also tappered internally so as to assist with suction into the carburettor. Using hoses without such a taper may diminish their effectiveness, with oil loss being a possible result.

Indeed it is, as the SU's are connected to the rocker covers giving the crankcase a slight negative pressure. The engine therefore draws air in from the pipe at the rear, keeping the engine cleaner.

Stick a 4 barrel on there and the normal choice is to connect the rover covers together with the breather hoses and feed it into the rear of the air filter, which has very little suction. Result, crankcase doesn't breathe correctly and engine gets dirty inside. Also, as there is no negative pressure inside the crankcase, you can get leaks as the oil forces its way out through any borderline seals or gaskets. And they don't need to be that borderline either :?

The PCV valve allows a smaller amount of breathing for higher suction. i.e. less breathing at tickover when the suction is high, and more when the revs are higher.

I don't really see the point in fitting them to a standard engine though as the SU connections do a perfectly acceptable job anyway.

Richard

I do wonder why they call it a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) when it's a negative pressure :?:

on a standard rover you are correct-pcv not needed however as stated-four barrel set up requires a pcv as there are no flame traps---also on mine pcv mounted at rear of carb on drivers side and a breather cap on other--my engine revs to 7500 rpm easily and no problems so far

Thank you. I will try this.
Ethelred,
Simply wondered if you found time to buy and fit two PCV valves and if you were pleased with the results ? Kind regards, Alanj.
