Clutch bolt washers

Hi I have a querry about washers used on the clutch bolts on the Rover TC, the ones that hold the clutch on to the flywheel. My WM specifies a very low torque for these bolts - about 12 - 15 ftlbs - and the parts manual lists tab washers rather than say spring washers. Question is will spring washers do instead of locking tab washers or is there a better option such as Locktite?

If you can't get the proper locktabs, then the only real alternative is spring washers, and a dab of Loctite won't hurt either. Just make sre that the bolts don't bottom out with spring washers only.

Thanks Harvey
Clutch is now installed with spring washers and Locktite, will have a go at attaching the gearbox tomorrow.
New Alternator setup as per photo:alternator1.JPG with modified bracket and home made rubber bushes, (courtesy of a local person who did the welding for me). Just hope it's lined up straight - if the fan belt comes off or shreds itself I'll know it wasn't. Have a spare regulator, one of the only extra bits I got with the car, so I'll try Dave's electrical setup for this. My only concern is that as the alternator has a smaller wheel thing it's going to spin faster than the dynamo but I assume / hope that as it is internally regulated that won't be a problem.

Alternators are designed to run faster than dynamo's , so usually have a smaller pulley to make use of this and allow them to charge at lower engine speeds such as idle.

So got the gearbox on ok then discovered one of the bottom UNC bolts from gearbox to sump had stripped out, I suspect because someone has tried to put a bolt in that was slightly too long then tried to tighten it up. My parts book says the 2 UNC bolts from gearbox to sump are different lengths, 1x 3 inch and 1x 2.75 inch - mine were both 3inch. So gearbox off again to repair the thread. So it goes...

I don't ever remember those 2 bolts being different lengths.

I can see how auto and manual bolts could be different lengths though.

It does seem odd.. I'm going off what the parts book for the SC seems to indicate but I might be misreading it. At any rate the thread in the sump is stripped so will get it fixed. The gearbox actually separated from engine much easier than I thought it would with the aid of some plastic wedges so that was good.

It appears both bolts should be the same length, 3" on early cars, 2 7/8" on later cars maybe becasue they added a spring washer.

Yours
Vern
