choke set up for 2000tc carbs

Hi can anyone help; I;ve got my 1967 2000tc running [again!] but after getting in a car tune expert he says the choke isn't working properly. I've now taken the carbs off and am at a lost to see how the choke cable operates, it appears that it is just connected to a static braket so when operated it has no obvious action with the carbs themselves, unless I'm missing something .....

Hi, it sounds like you're missing the two cables to the carbs themselves (red). I've done you a quick diagram so you can see the whole arrangement:

The choke cable from the centre console (blue) is a single one. It goes as far as the 'splitter' (the plastic cylinder bolted onto the bracket coming off the steering idler). A ball-end on the end of the cable attaches to a sliding spigot arrangement (green) inside the cylinder. You pass the cable sideways through a narrow slot in the 'spigot', and when you pull it tight, the ball sits in a nice little countersink so it won't come off in normal operation. There are two further slots with countersinks on the other side to take the twin cables which reach from this splitter to the carbs choke levers themselves. The cable inner wires attach to this sliding spigot. The cable sleeves are braced against the outside of the splitter housing itself and held with clevis pins (so only the cables themselves reach into the splitter).
Assuming you have HS8 type carbs (with crank case emission pipes), the choke lever are on the inner side of the carbs. Illustrated below:

I may have a few of the cables and possibly the splitter, etc, but they don't work very smoothly and the plastic thread on the end of the splitter housing split on mine. The HIF6 carbs that I converted to only need a single choke cable, as they have a balance bar between the choke levers, so that was a problem solved for me....

Nice diagrams Michael.

I think Kevin's car will have HD8 carbs though and I don't have mine nearby to check the operation at the moment. From memory, there's a lever on the base of each carb which pulls the internal diaphram down to lower the yet, there may be another lever for the fast idle too.

I've looked at the exploded diagram for HD8's a few times. It looks like Walschaerts valvegear slung under a carburettor! What's going on there?

Hi thanks for the help and the diagram will give it a go tomorrow if I still have a problem [pretty sure that only one cable comes from the dash ??] I'll take a couple of pictures, thanks again
Kevin

I had a look at mine this afternoon and the choke cable for HD8 carbs is different to the diagram above. The cable outer casing is clamped to a bracket in the underneath of the front carb and the inner wire goes forward to a lever under the carb body. there's a link rod which goes across to the rear carb.

 Ooh, interesting...! So it's only the HS8 setup with the twin cable arrangement then, which makes it all the more annoying as it's a right PITA to setup and it won't operate smoothly!

Hi I've looked at it closer and trhere is only one cable coming through a plastic sheath, as far as I can work out it must connect to the clamp and then the cable must attach to the arm for tr the front carb, failing that I'm abit at a lose to see how it would operate ... I've a couple of photos but the site won't let me load them!! [the carbs are AUD92]

The cable connects to the front carb and is linked to the rear carb by a the cranked rod which in turn operate two levers that are connected to the main jets inside the carb body, when the choke knob is pulled out the levers move the main jets down and richen the mixture,

Here is an exploded view of carb http://www.sucarb.co.uk/ExplodedImageCo ... ref=detail

It's worth noting that the HD8 main jet has a rubber diaphram fitted, and over time they get brittle and effect the mixture, the carbs in the pics suffered with this problem and I couldn't get the mixture correct no matter what I tried,....it was enough to drive a man crazy
A few of us TC owners have junked the HD & HS8 in favour of the HIF6 as fitted to the 2200 TC
