choke clip?

had middle section where radio and speaker grill were pulled back to enable access to heater control etc as removing heater box for a 'matrix' repair (done) but found a sort of 'U' shaped clip now loose with a small screw and locknut .think it came off choke control fixing to 'dash/gearbox' panel but not able to work out how to reaffix. since then choke light stays On and Turning to right no longer turns lamp off! Cant find any schematics online to refer to for re-fitting. Any pointers appreciated. its not a great worry as choke does in fact work and return but lamp annoyingly remains lit at all times grrr. 1645974786128.png

And if I remember right, it's possible to fit this to the switch & the cable and end up seeming right but actually out of position, so the light either still stays on or won't come on. There are holes in the side of the cable housing that little nubs on the switch locate in, that's what you have to pay attention to.

Yep, it'll do that!

thanks will attempt a fix during week when I have a few hours and a half hour preheating fridge first (garage) . let you know if I succeed . I gather from a friend whom had owned 6 P6 rovers (many years ago) that light is not only linked to choke cable position but theres a temperature sensor /switch on engine that can cause light to operate ..by showing cold engine requires choke ? not heard that before so any 'light' ( excuse pun) on that part is appreciated too.

The switch on the cable is wired to earth in series with the temp sender, so although the choke may be pulled out, the light shouldn't come on until the engine temp rises.

Isnt it wired through the Otter switch??

It is. Once the choke is pulled out the circuit is made through the cable switch, but the light won't come on until the engine temp rises enough to earth the circuit through the Otter switch.

interesting info. will see what occurs. sadly forgot going away for a while so all work stops on car until after return. will update the I eventually have a go at fitting.

Otter switches - are they still available?
Not that mines broken - but just thinking -well its 50yrs old now and surely wasn't built out of titanium.

The temperature sensor on the engine can fail and not indicate that engine is up to temperature. Mine has and it is stuck into the block by the thermostat housing, never to be removed, so my choke warning is always on. I have learned to live with this.

finally fixed back. the clip keeps part of an electrical 'switch' ? in place behind choke knob where there is a small plunger that goes in matching hole in metal casing behind knob. thus when operating knob by pulling out ..it operates it. took nearly 3 hours to remove console holding choke cable (also disconnecting from carb) to fixing it all back. very fiddly but virtually impossible to do in situ as you cannot see let alone 'feel' what is going on when trying to sort things. so far so good

Good morning,

I also spent a few hours yesterday to figure out how the choke light is supposed to be operating..

So, if I’m right the choke light stays off as long as the engine hasn’t reached a certain temperature yet, even when the choke is pulled out ?

Once the engine is on temperature and doesn’t need choke anymore, the otter switch connects to ground and the choke bulb will lighten up, as an indication that you should push the choke back in rest position ?

Amazing clever
