Choke cable switch, how is it connected to the cable?

Hi,

I am Peter, living in Holland and I own a RHD 1973 P6 3500 for almost 20 years now. I am currently fixing all small things which did not function properly like the dashboard clock, the wiper interval, the headlight flash and the parking lights. There is one thing still to do and that is the choke warning light which is not working. I have read many topics on this on the Forum already which are very useful. However when I took out the center speaker to get access to the cable there was no switch attached so I assume it was removed at some point in time when the previous owner put a new cable in. There are two lose wires one which shows a current when ignition is on. I have no idea how this switch is connected/attached to the cable. Before I buy a new switch, does somebody have a picture or a drawing which makes this a bit more clear.

Thanks,
Peter

I have seen this picture, but I still wonder how the switch is attached the cable. Has it to be fixed just after the locking nut? I saw à picture of à switch but is there à mounting screw on the switch?

The switch itself has a couple of locating lugs that fit into indents on the cable sleeve and an operating pin that goes through a hole in the sleeve. There is a small metal bracket (visible in that picture) that slides over the cable and clamps the switch onto the cable sleeve. It is then tightened with a screw and locknut.

Great, thnx! Would iT be possible to put THE switch on with the cable in situ?

Actually you have to. because you can't get the cable with the switch on through the hole.

True, but you can remove the centre console and that makes it a lot easier.

Done it both ways and removing the console plate is by far the best, easier to do and less scrapes and bruises to your suffering hands as well

when I took my P6 into the local garage in August they told me that the P6 choke cable contained a bi-metal strip that as you pulled the choke out it turned the warning light on. the garage advised me that the car now had the wrong choke cable that didnt have the bi-metal strip and thats why the choke warning light wasnt coming on

The system has two switches in series. one was a bi-metal (Otter) switch in the cylinder head and the other on the cable. This set up will not operate the light with the choke operated until the coolant in the head warmed up . It came on to remind you too push in the choke only when the engine was warm. . I think your garage is getting confused with the two switches , it needs both to work.
I know on some later V8's and Land Rovers , the Otter switch in the head was deleted , the wire just connected to earth and the light would then illuminate as soon as the choke is operated.
