Changing Transmission fluid

I changed my transmission fluid in my 1970 3500s only to find out that it was the wrong type.I have to change it again and replace it with the correct type.Could anyone tell me how much fluid is in the Torque converter as when I fill the transmission with the correct amount according to the manual it overflows.
I will have to flush the transmission several times.

Because you can't drain the converter you need to do four drain/refills with use in between to make sure you have most of the old fluid out. The more drain/refills you do the more of the old fluid you get out. Just draining probably gets about 5 or 6 pints out.

rookie question here - if you are simply changing the transmission fluid after X years of use, (like for like), how many drain / refills would you advise is required to ensure the Torque converter fluid is fully flushed out and replaced with new fluid.
The answer will help be budget on quantity of fluid to buy - thanks

Same as I said before, about 4 drain/refills with use in between. The more you do, the more you reduce the amount of the fluid you're trying to get rid of.
I'd buy 3 gallons and see how many change that gets you.
Total capacity is 1.75 gallons so you should get well on your way.

When I was on the buses, most of the fleet had fluid flywheels. They had three fill/drain plugs around the circumference, positioned at 5 to or 5 after TDC to top up, one of which was a fusible plug. It was a plug with a tapped hole filled with lead solder, if it got too hot it lets go. I can tell you that makes a mess!! Later vehicles had charged couplings which are more like a conventional torque converter.
