Change from 11ac to 18acr, is it a good idea?

You should be able to use the 18ACR plug in loom, then just join the two wires that aren't the earth on the 3AW to get the light working and fit the ring connector to the starter solenoid battery in terminal.

Just to clarify for an electrical dumb ass (me)

What is the 18ACR plug in loom ?

The 3AW is the round silver relay thingy in the drivers cubby bin on the door jamb ?

Please explain this bit you wrote

'and fit the ring connector to the starter solenoid battery in terminal '

Thanks

Hello Harvey. I tried the guard the other way around, but then it interferred with the belt. So I had to turn it.

When I wrote the above I had it in my mind it was a 2000/2200 being discussed, and on those it has a separate loom with the multiplug for the alternator at one end, and a ring terminal to fit to the solenoid and a connector for the warning light at the other, so not relevant to the V8.

The 3AW is as you describe it.

Today I finally connected my new 18 acr alternator to my 3500s. I followed the directions from roverp480 and Harvey. It worked perfectly. The output on the battery with the engine on was 14.4 V, and about 14.0 V with the light on and the electric fan. That is ok numbers, is it not? Thanks for your help guys!

I don’t have the space on my 71 non pas to fit the alternator in. Compared to yours! Any ideas why mine is so different? The pulleys line up but the alt is longer than 11ac. I bought a 1300mm belt but that’s to long original 1165mm is too short

Hi, There's a different bracket that puts the alternator further away so the alternator is outside of the rocker cover line, which is what the longer belt is for.

It's a terrible idea to upgrade an 11AC to an 18ACR... You should upgrade it to an A127 as it'll fit the bracket - its simply a more modern version of the ACR. - and cheaper.

In either case the Lucas/Bosch terminal block is needed with two main wires and not the 1/2" spade connector with the 11AC so theres a bit of work involved.

I wrote it up in detail already if you do some searching.

Already done the wiring block etc when trying to fit the ACR18. So just need to fit A127 when I arrives.
