Carburettor incompetence

I am sure no-one else would make this stupid mistake, but just in case . . . . .

I decided to service the HiF6's and went to the SU Carb site to order the parts. Ordered two service kits, two new needles and two new floats. When I come to service the right hand side carb the float chamber cover won't fit with the new jet, because it's pointing the wrong way. It appears that the floats and the jets are "handed" ie different for the right and left carburettor. I am very cross, and fire off a sarcastic email to SU Carbs scolding them for sending me the wrong bits. Feeling pleased with myself, I then go back to the website and check my order. Only then do I see that on the relevant page there are two separate tabs labelled LEFT and RIGHT for ordering parts for the appropriate carburettor. In my haste and enthusiasm I had clicked on the relevant parts in the LEFT tab and then just doubled up when I got to the checkout. How I laughed when I saw my silly mistake (NOT!).

Anyway, new order placed and humble pie email sent to SU Carbs.

What fun we are having.

You would have thought that someone there might just have asked the question, "Why does this chap want two left hand rebuild kits?"

There is such a thing as a duty of care, and a quick email could have stopped a whole load of hassle.

I'll be checking the pair of service kits I have later.....

Hopefully they are a left and right but I wouldn't be surprised if I've done the same

I did exactly the same, just ordered x2 of everything not thinking they would be different for L & R!!! Luckily they had not sent it out yet even though I put the order some time ago. Thanks for the warning, just been on the phone to them to sort it, phew

Thanks guys. Misery loves company, so I feel much better knowing I'm not the only one who did this, and even more pleased that you managed to resolve the situation prior to delivery. Result!

To Richard's observation about duty of care, well it's a fair point. Especially as it clearly can't be the first time it's happened. And there can't be that many cars out there running with two left hand carburettors. All those who are currently running this configuration please send a photo - we'd love to see it! On the other hand, perhaps it's a cunning marketing ploy used by SU boost their sales statistics?

Fired off an e-mail to Rimmer Brothers "where are my rocker cover gaskets?"

pulled out con note on the front of the other package I got at the same time "package 1 of 2".

Oooops.

Still haven't got my gaskets though...

Email can be very dangerous technology for those of us with hasty temperament. Am getting accustomed to the taste of humble pie though.
