BW35 Whine

At last after a lengthy overhaul, I have been out in my Rover! The gearbox is lovely and quiet and the engine running perfectly. But there is always a question otherwise I wouldn't be here!

I have refitted the kickdown cable but it is in need of adjustment. This, I believe is easy enough on a road test by checking gear change speeds under low throttle, then full throttle, and kickdown according to the manual. But I haven't done any of that yet because I know from my test drive already that it is changing very late and at much higher revs that is should be. So before the serious setup, some adjustment is needed. I am thinking that the cable needs to be lengthened to solve this and make the gearchange earlier. That would seem logical. Can anyone confirm this?

If your shifts are late and sloppy then the cable is too slack, if the shifts are harsh and early then the cable is too tight.
Just ensure the engine idle speed is set 600-650 rpm when warm ( lower if possible ) and your fluid level is correct.
Also worth checking the linkage as this has a rubber spindle bush that drops out when worn and can cuuse difficulty in setting things up.

The adjuster on the outer cable needs to be screwed towards the carbs.

After quite a long delay, I have now finished the work on my car. The refurbished gearbox and torque converter are brilliant and after a bit of setting up of the kickdown cable, it goes like a dream! If you are familiar with NADA engines there are two ways to set up the timing. Either TDC with the vacuum retard (yes, retard) pipe disconnected, or at 8 deg ATDC with the pipe connected. The former is for running in countries where 5 star is not available and the latter requires 5 star fuel, so 100 octane minimum. I run my car on Shell V-Power Plus and Castrol lead additive with octane booster so basically rocket fuel. I used to have it set on the TDC setting but now I have it set properly and the power difference is quite surprising!

So all ready for some shows next year!

They do only fit where they are supposed to. The bumpers have holes and captive nuts fitted. They are also about 3mm thick and weigh an absolute ton!!DSCF0603.JPGDSCF0604.JPGDSCF0609.JPG

Every day's a schoolday. NADA's aren't really on my radar but that's another little bit of knowledge to squirrel away for future reference.

What a cracking job! Very nice indeed. I look forward to seeing your car in the flesh and congratulating you in person one day, perhaps.
