BW35 Separate Oil Cooler.

Hi Guys, After reading about the leaking problems of the BW35 I'm thinking about installing a separate cooler with anti drain-back valves, for the health of the box and to try and combat the leakage a bit. Are there any definite 'do's' or 'don'ts'? I'm thinking it will mount nicely behind the front valence under the bumper, in front of the radiator. Advice? Suggestions on brands etc etc?

The biggest danger with the auto cooler in the radiator is cross contamination. A separate cooler eliminates that possibility. You shouldn't need anti drainback valves especially if mounted behind the front valence. The fluid is pumped through the cooler when it retuns from the converter. You could have a thermostat in the cooler to bypass the matrix before the fluid reaches working temperature, but once fluid has gone through the converter it gets warmed up pretty quickly anyway.

Cool. The idea of the valves was just as they were raised in another discussion regarding leaks. Any type of kit ok or are there some I should aim for/avoid?

Converter drain back can be a problem, but with the cooler you would just need to stop the fluid going back down the cooler return to the box. If a cooler is fitted it shouldn't be any worse than standard. There are valves that fit into the cooler return line gearbox fitting, but they are rare, so you either have to do without, or have one made.

I can't remember hearing of any problems with any particular type of cooler.
