Burning

Now I am confused...
To cut a long story short. After finding some burnt wiring which I followed back from the + side of the ignition coil, through the bulk-head, getting lost behind the dashboard with the only option but to remove the complete dashboard. I carefully unwrapped the electrical tape from the loom which revealed about 6 inches of melted insulation. The cable in question is the White/Yellow which is the output-side of the tacho and of course the schematic shows a ballast wire, which I can't find and appears to be straight through to the + side of the coil.
Please refer to the schematic attached. 27 = ignition coil. 26 = Tacho. If you follow the top-side of 26, (12 o-clock position) it's feed comes from a common junction to the right of number 32.
I replaced the entire run from the + side of the ignition coil to the 3 o-clock position of item 26.
Now the car was running ok until I drove the car back from my mechanic and during the drive home it stopped (cutout) twice, but managed to start it after several attempts getting home eventually. The way it died was instant, which made me think it is ignition. Gauges worked before, but driving back, no tacho, oil pressure and temperature with no sign of charging on the ammeter. I found he had left the connections off, so thought pushing back on the connectors would resolve everything and that's when it started to smoke.
So after replacing the wiring I was at the stage of starting the car. In the meantime I ordered a replacement ignition coil, just in case this was the reason the car cut-out. Checked for any shorts and cranked the engine over. Dashboard fitted, but not screwed in as I wanted to make sure no repeat of burning cable. After several cranks of the starter motor it burst into life and was running nice a smooth, then smoke emitted from the wire (very hot) which comes from the tacho, runs to the positive side of the ignition coil, so quickly switched the car off.
This car has a Lumention MK 12 electronic ignition and the tacho worked before, although slightly erratic (small pulsing of the needle) and the wiring has not changed since.
The tacho is wired to the + sign of the ignition coil. The schematic indicates two positions for the tacho, depending on type, pulse or voltage tacho.
I don't understand why more current is being drawn as nothing has changed and the car does start and runs. I have belled the cable (two white and yellow cables to the + side of the ignition coil) which is the thicker of the two which runs all the way over to the starter motor pick-up side which is just picking a 12 vds supply. The other white and yellow is the smaller gauge wire which comes from the tacho.
Can anyone help as I have run out of ideas.
Thanking everyone who may be able to enlighten me on this.
