BRAKE warning light

This has just started to flick on and off, albeit intermittently. Seems to happen when the brake pedal is pressed (even if car stationary) but not always - it does flick on and off on the move when the foot isn't on the brake. Pads have max 3000 miles wear on them. I haven't had the chance to investigate yet, but has anyone any ideas?

Handbrake warning button, under the rubber boot tends to wear and give these spurious warnings.

The other one is the level indicator in the fluid reservoir. It's cork and over time forgets how to float which gives a false low fluid level light.

I think I'd be checking the level in the fluid reservoir first to make sure that's okay before moving on to anything else.

After that I'd have a look at the condition of the cork float in the reservoir lid. These become saturated over time and stop floating, giving a flickering light.

(I think Paul got there just as I hit the submit button :) )

Fluid level is good and I did replace the cork float with one of those rubber corks from a modern wine bottle <hic>.

I tried it last night - ignition on, engine not running, car stationary. Brake pedal pressed - like comes on. Release pedal, press pedal again - no light. Release pedal, push pedal - no light. Release pedal, push pedal - light comes on. Hold pedal on - light goes out!

I had a similar problem, and although the fluid level was fine, the fault turned out to be a combination of the cork, and the switch within the cap of the reservoir. If you remove the wires from the cap does the fault persist? If so, at least you can discount the fluid level sensor and look elsewhere :)

Thanks guys. I will take the wires off the reservoir cap and go from there. My car seems to have been struck down by a number of electrical maladies as of late.

My BRAKE light used to flicker occasionally, and it turned out the float and surrounding metal was eaten away with particles in the base of the reservoir. Good used replacement sorted it.

Took wires off cap tonight and the problem vanished! I did replace the float some years ago but will prise the centre off the cap to see what is going on with the float/terminals therein.

Thanks guys. A clean up and a very small top up of fluid was all that was needed.

Now I just need to sort out the non functioning fuel and temp gauge and the lack of IGN and OIL warning lights when the key is turned to the 2nd position.

Oh and the non functioning clock...

I foolishly drove 300 miles with the brake light illuminated and it melted the plastic cover. Am reminded if this idiocy every time the sunlight catches the now ripply bit of plastic.

I did fix the clock though!
