BRAKE & CLUTCH QUERY - AWKWARD CLUTCH

Hello all,

Wandered if anyone could help a p6 newcomer with this one.
I have recently rescued a sorry looking 3500s from the clutches of banger racers and have set about the task of restoring it on a budget learning all the mechanics as i go armed with a tattered haynes manual and a lot of patience. The clutch is not working as it should gear change is very difficult, i had assumed a master or slave problem an decided to do the front brakes first.. Today after changing the front discs i was pumping the brake pedal checking the travel when i noticed the revs of the engine increase gradually as i carried on pumping the brakes. I had my hand resting on the gear lever at the time and accidentally slid it in to first gear.
First gear had previously been near impossible to engage yet by pumping the brake pedal not the clutch as i done before to get it in gear all gears could be selected easily for a short time with the clutch depressed. A few moments after stopping pumping the brake pedal the gears became hard to select again, I am going mad or am i just completely ignorant of the ins and outs of the p6 hydraulic system.
Wandered if any of you knowledgeable people out their could give a diagnosis before i start undoing rusty pipe unions and getting up to my elbows in hydraulic fluid.
Thanks Colin

It's not unusual for the revs to increase if you pump the brake pedal , it's because it lets air into the inlet manifold via the servo
As for it going into gear easier , does it go in easier if you rev up using the accelerator ? Maybe the clutch drags at low revs and frees off as you rev up
Can't see any other connection, the hydraulic systems are separate apart from the reservoir
