Brain picking...

Hello all,

Just a quick one to see what your thoughts are.

Car runs great motors along fantastically and will cover decent mile ages with mo trouble. But....... Once warm it hesitates and splutters when pulling off which clears once it's going.

Any thoughts ?

Could be a host of things. Retarded ignition/points gap too narrow ; seized weights in distributor ; vacuum capsule inoperative ; weak mixture ; air leak at inlet manifold ; carburettor piston damper lacking oil ; carburetter piston sticking - and so it goes on, but a few things there for you to check . It could also be a very obscure fault I once had on an SC , where the camshaft had worn a valley in a tappet so that the relevant inlet valve was hardly opening . This created a shudder which disappeared as engine speed rose

Thanks Christopher, funnily enough I topped up dash pot last weekend and then had probs, what level is it best to it up to?

The level is really not critical unless you really overdo it. I top them off until you can see oil in the piston rod . What is of importance is the oil you use. It should not be heavier than a medium weight engine oil, say 10w/40, and in the past lighter oil was used than that, rather like light machine oil. Certainly, if you went significantly heavier than 20/50 you would end up with some very untoward effects - usually overrich mixture. If the trouble only started after you topped the dashpot, I should try running it without the piston damper in to see if that makes any difference
