Boses

Hi again to all, Can anyone tell me if there are any mountney steering wheel bosses that would fit our cars from land / range rover series?, Or is the spline size spcific to Rovers.

Yep, there is one specific to the P6. I have one attached to a Mountney wheel! Unfortunately it doesn't fit on the P6 splines  the splines in the boss are just too small an internal diameter. And it's too late to send back for a refund! Fortunately I have subsequently decided the Mountney wheel is too small anyway, so I'm now committed to my PAS size wheel. (Lucky is non power assisted)

Re: Bosses

Thanks Chris, My 3500S came with a nice original rover bakelite 15inch wheel unfortunately its not the correct one and now I have to either find a proper one or a nice alternative, Why cant folk leave things alone Grrrr, Anyone have a wheel or a suitable Boss?. Rgards, Keith.

Re: Steering wheel Bosses

Hi
Theres any easy fix . The standard wheel bolts to a flange which is carried on the splined centre . The horn and all the electrical gubbins are mounted on the steering column . so there are no electrical connections involved when you swap wheels.I swapped my standard Leyland bus sized wheel for a neat Nardi wood rim go fast wheel
If you unbolt the standard wheel all you need is an adapter plate drilled mate the flange and new wheel bolt circles to fit between the flange and the new wheel centre boss .You will probably need a spacer any way because the original wheel is deeply dished . You should check the clearance between the new wheel and the dash board
Every pub used to have " Old Bert" with a lathe in his chicken coop who can machine up a spacer/ adapter in no time ? Or is this now a dream ??
Cheers
Patrick

Hey Keith, could you PM me a link to the seller or item please or post it here? Would like to check out some steering wheel options - something just a tad smaller and not gaudy would be nice.

Patrick - I hope "Old Berts" do still hang out in pubs in your neck of the woods, unfortunately I think retirement, CNC lathes & outsourcing may have cut their numbers :( Either that or I need to find some new watering holes - hmm, time for a New Year's resolution?

Take care,

Paul

I now know what chrisyork meant when he said that he had a centre boss specifically for the P6 that wouldnt fit, The Mountney one that I bought wont fit either and it clearly states on the box for Rover 2000-3500 up to 76, great pity now I will have to bodge it or something.

Did you find any conclusion to this? I too bought a Mountney wheel off ebay and am really pleased with it. Unfortunatly I bought a Mountney MB033 boss (the one listed for the 2000) of ebay that didn't fit, assuming that as it was a used part it was in the wrong box i bought another MB033 from Merlin Motor Sport but its definatly the wrong thing. As far as i can tell the only company making a boss for the P6 is Moto Lita, lovely wheels but far too expensive! Anyone had any luck with this problem? Would love to fit that wheel!!!!!!!!!!!!

Merlin motor sport are at Castle Coombe race circuit!
I am going to a show there tomorrow, so I will take my spare top column and see if we can find a boss thats right!
I hope you have let them know its wrong and sent it back?

Thanks pilkie, that would be great! :D I did send the boss back to Merlin who were very helpful. Before I sent it back I phoned Mountney to check there listing and they do have it listed as the MB033. I told both Merlin and Mountney that it does not fit the P6, I don't belive either company has made any changes to their listings though. I also got the impression when I recived the boss from Merlin that it had been opened and someone had tried to fit it so I don't think I was the first person to have a problem with that part.

Look forward to your findings! Beware! Going into the Merlin shop at Castle Combe is diabetic in a sweet shop stuff! I went there a couple of years ago when I was with Club Audi on a track day. No track action for me though, its a long way from me and a bit of a brake killer (apparently), I needed to get home!

Here we go again, going back to the original post does any one know if a Land Rover boss would fit? They are 36 spline, anybody know how many splines on a P6 steering column? The Land Rover Series shares some parts with the P6 so I'm ever optimistic that we will eventually find a Mountney boss that fits..........
