Borg Warner 65 tapping / ticking sound

Seriesv8

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I hope it’s ok to post this request for advice.

I have a Borg Warner 65 gearbox mated to a rover 3.5 v8 in my series Land Rover.

At idle, in park, the gearbox bell housing has a pronounced tick, it’s repetitive and in time with the engine idle.

When driving the noise is still there, it just has more of a ring to it… (more precisely I’d call it a light clang, almost like a very distant old fashioned fire station bell!) It’s quite disconcerting.

A Landy is quite unrefined and noisy at the best of times, so I might be missing it, but it seems like the noise may only be happening off-throttle, but it’s quite hard to tell

In all other respects the gearbox performs perfectly - changes well with no clonks between gears. The gearbox fluid is lovely cherry red and smells lovely.

The vehicle is never driven very far and prior to recently it was off the road for a year while other works were ongoing, so it does sit around a lot if that is relevant.

I’m sure a clang isn’t ever a good sign, but I hope that you might be able to form an opinion whether this is something particularly serious, or possibly just the result of natural wear on a component.

Link to idling video below, there was no point trying to video it while in motion as you’d never hear it over the exhaust note! It’s hard to tell on the video but the noise is Definitely coming from the bell housing rather than the engine.

Once again, I hope this is ok to post here.

I would be inclined to check all four of the torque converter bolts to ensure they are tight.

( remove the lower cover plate for access to the bolts, rotate the engine so each bolts arrives at the optimum position to check them )

Thank you very much, I’ll try that and report back!

When the cover plate is removed and you rotate the engine you will also see if there is something else amiss by watching the movement of the converter through the inspection aperture .

Try testing with the transmission dipstick removed. And check the vent pipe for tube is not rattling against the bell housing. Bent dipsticks can vibrate against the pan or the tube causing a ticking noise. The cooler pipes also run down the side of the pan and bellhousing. I'd think on a series car they would be surrounded by transfer case bits. What kind of transfer case does it use?

Thanks, I double-checked this after your comment, and it's definitely not the cause. The transfer box/case is a standard Land Rover one with an adapter by Ashcroft transmissions, I believe they stopped making them for this configuration years ago (this setup has been in the case since the early 90's).

On deeper inspection today the noise is definitely inside the bellhousing. Unfortunately it seems there are no inspection covers on the underside and so I suppose the only way to check might be to remove the starter motor? It's difficult to see as there is a gearbox crossmember inconveniently in the way, so I may have to take it up to my friendly local Land Rover garage for a peek on the ramp.

Thanks again to you both for the advice - seems it will be a few days before I know any more, but I will be back to update the thread!

Hi, Another thing it could be is the cowl around the torque converter clipping some thing in the bellhousing.

Remove the starter and look at the drive plate for tell tale rust streaks or cracks. These can crack or give way altogether.

I have to say that I've never seen that with a BW35/65/66 RV8 flexplate. I've had them with the converter bolts left loose and they elongate the holes, and sound like a big end knock.

Hello everyone, and thanks for all your messages and suggestions. I just wanted to come back and let you know that it was indeed loose torque converter bolts, and everything now sounds super!
