borg warner 35 oil leak

my auto box has a leak from an oil seal that is just below the inhibitor switch, I believe that it is the seal from the manual gear selector cross shaft. The question is what is the procedure for replacing it.

Best wishes John

That's the selector shaft seal, and it can be replaced with the box in situ, you prise the old seal out by pushing a spike into it and levering, and then push the new seal in. The problem is that there is a step on the shaft and that can make the seal lip turn itself outwards damaging the new seal, so my advice is to buy several seals and if you're careful one will go in OK. Ideally you would make a sleeve to go over the shaft and protect the seal, but it can be done without. You'll have to remove the exhaust front pipe to get good access IIRC.

If the engine has been run just before doing the job, then the converter won't have had time to drain back into the box, and providing the level is correct, that seal should be just above the fluid level, so personally I wouldn't drain it, and if any fluid did come out I'd just work around it. That bit of fluid may make the seal slide over the step on the shaft a bit easier.

My son came up with a good idea of fitting the seal, and that is to use cable heat shrink over the shaft, heat then to shrink the sleeve leaving hopefully a smooth shaft with no step!!

Regards John

As long as the heat shrink goes over the step in the shaft, and you can get it off once the seal is fitted I'd say that has a good chance of success.

Hi John, I took interest in your idea and wondered if it was successful ?, my type 35 seems to leak forever no matter what I do!, I have to admit I'm not familiar with the "cable heat shrink" system, how does this work?

Hi Dave,
The idea of using the heat shrink was not used in the end, we used liberal amount of rubber grease and the seal went on easy, it was a half hour job (maybe an hour) and yes the leak did stop, from there anyway.

Hi John,
Many thanks for the info, interestingly "the leak stopped" from there, I suppose we are always going to get a leak from somewhere, at least it's one less! as the man says "not for nothing is it called the wet box"
Best Regards Dave
