Hi all, I have just purchased a Borg Warner 35 for $50, it has made in Australia written on it, I was expecting a British box. Anyone have any info on it, I was wondering how old it is, apparently this trans is out of a 1975 p6, I have googled the serial number but not much luck. Any info appreciated, thanks.

Hi Bert,

Rover were fitting BW65 transmissions from 1974 onwards, but that doesn't preclude the possibility that your Australian made BW35 was at some point fitted into a 1975 Rover. The transmissions supplied for the cars were UK manufactured, so your recent purchase may have been in any number of cars originally.

Ron.

Quite possibly you have a reconditioned box which was swapped over rather than rebuilt. If that's the case you probably got all the upgrades to toughen them up for taxi use ie BW65 gearset. Make sure the Torque converter has the fan on it if your car is a V8 as they tend to wander off during the reco process...

Upgrades for Taxi's, interesting, thanks.

Going on the serial plate info it's from an early model, going on what I can see with the sump off it's an early model.
I would say 71 at the latest.
( there are few tell tales to find out the exact year )

Was it originally on a Rover? BW 35s were used on Ford Falcons and would have been built here.
Though fitting one to a Rover would have required significant modification.

@mike I was told by the seller it was out of his mates 1975P6 V8 but I cant confirm. That P6 wasn't on his property, or his mate.

Hi Bert,

If you take it to a transmission place for a rebuild, you could expect to pay anything from say $1000 onwards. I have no experience in rebuilding these, so the information that I have comes from what people that repair them have told me. Given the trivial nature of the information, I see no reason as to why they would lie. What I have learnt over 36 years of driving my Rover is that the Rover parts, both hard and soft were inferior to the Australian made Ford parts. The Rover value body is not the same as the Ford valve body, the shift points are different. My transmission is full of Ford parts except for the valve body which remains the original Rover part. Here is an advert for company that have race spec BW35 transmissions for sale. I have no connection with the company nor experience with any of their products, but given the severe penalties for false advertising under Australian Law, imposed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), it would certainly not be advisable to lie about your products.

Thanks, that's one powerful looking Borg Warner 35. I may have bought a box that has strengthened parts? Sounds good.

I wonder, did the New Zealand assembled cars use Australian manufactured BW35s? It would have been an easy way to get up the Australian content and then get them in without tariffs!

By 1975 all the UK assembled 3500’s would have been BW 65’s. However the NZ assembled ones may have been different.
