Boot Lid R&R issues?

Are there any real alignment issues when refitting a boot lid? I have seen a warning that its easy to mark the outer skin if the lid loads the hinge arm while moving it on/off. Do they go back where they were easily, or not? WSM says very little here.
thanks.

It is good to have a helper with you when you are pushing the lid onto the hinge irons . It is very easy for the hinge iron to set marks in the lid. So two sets of steady hands is preferable.

from memory, many years ago I made the mistake of not putting the hinge bolts back where I got them from. The issue being that one bolt is longer than the other, and if you put the long bolt in the short hole you will puncture the surface of the boot skin. I learnt the hard way on that one. Also unless they are in remarkably good condition, it’s probably a good time to replace the rubber sleeve that goes into the boot lid at the point where the hinge brackets slot in.

Speedfreak is spot on, be certain to put the bolts back in the same place. I didn't actually puncture the outer boot skin, but despite having a helper I did manage to make a little upwards 'point' in it by using the longer bolt where the sorter one should've gone. Doh!

All good info, keep it coming please. Sounds like 3 sets of hands would be good - 2 to hold the lid while another removes or starts the bolts. Will try to avoid removal, if possible.....
