Bonnet respray

Hi,

3 months into ownership of a slightly 2-tone 3500S - high time to get it sorted! She's had what looks like a decent re-spray in the past, but not in Tobacco Leaf - from memory it's more like the old BL Harvest Gold, which I think suits her much better and I'd like to keep.

Trouble is, they never got round to the bonnet! There's also some blistering/corrosion on the front edge.

Anyone know of a decent re-finisher in the Leicester area?

Cheers,
Stan

Just look on the web for bodywork geezers in your area. It`ll be a bit faster than waiting for the right response on the forum.

Don't think it's Harvest Gold Wasn't that what they used on BL 11/1300's in the 70's? A lighter shade than yours, from memory

Try and find a bodyshop through recommendation, any other way and you won't have much idea what kind of job they do until it's been done. Try and see some previous work that's been done for a couple of years.

Maybe the memory's flawed Dave...now what did I come upstairs for? :)

Just remember the 6-year old HG Maxi I tootled around the country in from '78 for another 6 years before it went for banger racing..what a shame! But some would say not!

Thanks Demetris - I certainly don't remember the Maxi being that colour..but maybe it was! Tricky things, memories...

..and thanks Harvey. Yes, though I was hoping someone on the forum might have had good results from someone fairly local and be able to recommend them.

Cheers,
Stan

BL did some lovely colours in the 70's on Marinas and the like
They was a purple and a olove-green type colour to name but two
Paint that never seemed to shine

Is it possible that colour is Brasilia? Used in the last year of production as a replacement for Mexico Brown and carried over to the SD1. It was a lighter and creamier shade than Mexico which seems to fit what you have. These P6's were painted in the SD1 paint facility hence their appaling rust performance!

Chris

I think its lighter than Brasilia, Chris...

...if this is a true rendering of the colour of course!

Brasilia SD1

whereas mine is...

OCY 88M

Love it!...significant other still not convinced though!

If anybody recognises this? (The colour that is, not the G/F's reaction of course...)

Stan

I had an Austin America (the problems and fate of which I will not discuss) But it was in that color which BL called "Sable"

Dick West

It was a beautiful color

Thanks Dick,

Tried googling for BL austin ambassador sable...without success. But it's a good starting point for a colour match.

Once I find a decent craftsman that is..if it's not Eurobox standard, it seems quite a few don't want to know!

Really? Intriguing..is it original?

Colour ID on the wing valance says Tobacco Leaf..which the bonnet is..or close. Rest of the car's had paint at some time..but looks pretty well done.

I'm thinking maybe the bonnet picked up some damage post-respray and the then owner acquired one in Baccy Leaf.

Am I correct in assuming what was called the "Austin America" was called the Marina on the other side of the pond?

This will bring you to the color choices for 1969 Austin Americas
Sable is RD30

Gee, now remembering that color, has got me second guessing. I was going to paint my TC a dark mettalic Green, but this Sable Color would look awfully good with the chocolate leather I have in the car.........hmmmmmm

Hi Dick

The Marina was a rebodied version of the 1948 Morris Minor. Austin America was the ADO16 Austin/Morris/Wolseley/Riley/MG 1100/1300. I believe the body spec used was close to Austin 1300GT (which had the Mini Cooper S engine) but with a normal 1300 motor coupled to BMC's own 4 spd automatic - about the first transverse engine auto.

Johnny Durex - the photos' make both your cars look superb. Are they that good in real life? Must say I think a TC Auto sounds an attractive proposition. Not as underpowered as the SC Auto.

Looks like good old Baccy leaf to me!! It's one of those colours that can look lovely when it's all fresh and polished, but can look horrible when faded.
The problem is now with classic car colours, is that paint is going over to the water based system, and a lot of the mixing ratio's for older colours, aren't being transferred over. Major paint suppliers, such as ICI, will work out the mixing ratios if requested by a larger bodyshop.

The best way to get a good job is to ask around, and have a look at their work, before agreeing to anything. Also remember that a lot of the cost with re painting a car is labour, so I would suggest taking the panels off the car, stripping the panels of all trims, etc, then take the bare panels to the bodyshop. This is how I had mine done. Piccy's of mine in "Before and After" guise are in the welcome section of the Forum

If you take bare panels to a good bodyshop, then I would estimate a full repaint would cost between 1000 to 1500.
