Bonnet Release - How To open

Rover P6B

New Member
Hi
I would first of all like to introduce myself,my name is Graham i am from Sheffield, now living in Manitoba Canada for the past 28 years.
Now the problem i have is that i am in the prosses of restoring a 1969 P6B and the bonnet release cable has broken with the bonnet closed, how can i open it.
Looking forword to your help

hi graham,
if your centre grille badge is the one that is only a push fit (try pulling it off) then you should be able to get to the bonnet slider catch and force a screw driver in to release it. ian near sheffield. i think you have e-mailed me, if i am right welcome to the site. all the best, let's know how you get on.

Hi Graham,

Process of simplest thing first,

a)If the cable has broken at the glove box end try pulling it with a firm grip with plyers, check that the pull toggle hasn't just popped out of its slot first.

b)If the cable has broken midway get under the car & reach up till you can feel the radiator cap. Behind it towards the front of the bonnet you should be able to feel the release cable, check first that the cable hasn't broken at the bonnet catch (look through the front grill). If not fiddle about with it till you have enough to grip it again with pliers, there are retaining clip screws that secure the cable along the inner wing they will hinder you from trying to get cable to grip, however pull the cable from windscreen direction towards the front of the car.

c)If the cable has broken at the bonnet catch you may be able to grip it with the long crocodile style of pliers through your grille.

d)Failing all of that you may have to sacrifice an eggbox portion of your grill to gain access(can be hidden with an AA badge at a later date.

hope this is of some help

Regards John

Just one thing to add, if you get an assistant to press down on the bonnet while your messing, it makes it easier to move the catch. Obviously you'll need them to release the pressure to open the bonnet !!

I'm sure somewhere in my garage I have a complete bonnet release system (from the pull knob all the way down to the bonnet release slider catch etc.). I think it came from a 1975 V8 auto. If it fits your model (and I'm sure someone on here can tell us if it does) than you can have it for the price of the postage & packing.

Graham has contacted me stating that his car is left hand drive. If I can find the bonnet release cable will it fit his as it came from a r/h/d/ vehicle ??? .

Phil,
My cable is about six ft. six ins. , if you just measure your cable and it is the same it should be ok.
Graham

Hi Graham,
Found the cable......at last. Yes, it is about 6'6" long. All I need now is your address. I estimate the postage at about £5, which I think is about $12 CDN???.

Regards.............Phil.
