Bonnet badge

Anyone know any repro outfits making P6 bonnet badges. Some weasel has tried to get mine off and have broken it. Are the SD1 or 800 badges a similar looking thing? Ours is not a concourse car so does have to be perfect. Cheers

Seen a couple on evilbay, not interested at the price, can do with the one that's on. Go to a load of shows so will continue the search, one might pitch up? Have a bit of time before we finish the paint job anyway. Cheers guys.

I think Jeff at wins has the sole license to remake them again if he wants.

That not actually correct, Wins took over from the original person who had commissioned an excellent reproduction bonnet badge from a USA firm to make.
It seems that since that first run was made Wins has not seen fit to organise subsequent runs, a very poor state of affairs for P6 owners.

No one has a licence to make any thing and I doubt that the origional copy right of the Rover company design for that badge has any legal effect this far down the track.......

Soooo if any one can find a suitable badge manufacturer to reproduce the badges go at it!.

I have done quite a lot of research to try and find a decent manufacturer to make a quality bonnet and boot badge for the P6 so far with out success.

If any one knows of a good badge making company PM me. I would have no hesitation in producing badges for sale if the quality was right and unlike Wins the supply would not dry up.

I wonder if TATA lawyers are of the same opinion?

I think ownership of things like car parts hardware is a little blurred now with mechanical going to Siac in China and the actual Rover name going elsewhere possibly Tata or is it ford or BMW I dont think it is Landrover however all that said I dont think after the mess of the break up any one cares any more. I also doubt that Ian Wilson actually approached the disparate factions of the potential owners of the badge intellectual or copy right owners, though I am happy to be corrected.

In the event of any queries from those parties I suspect that the classics market for long dead cars is of any interest to them as seems to be the case with other vintage car reproduction parts for other marques.

Rover brand is either owned by JLR or TATA direct. BMW kept it when LR was owned by Ford , but was sold it on by BMW when TATA took over JLR. MG Rover never owned the Rover brand but did own MG, that's why there are still MG branded products made in China

Yes its entirely confusing and has got to be one of the messiest breakups in motoring history. The western side was messy and the Chinese side equally messy with it being sold to 2 separate companies, until that is the Chinese government knocked some sense into the deal and forced the 2 companies to combine.

Its interesting when you go to China and you see "Rover" 75's everywhere or should I say Roewe. That particular car does not engender the respect of the local Chinese even though it looks pretty identical to its UK produced counterpart.

A lack of automotive taste obviously. I wonder if they would sell if available in the U.K.? That would be an interesting prospect but would probably be a pretty limited market. However you would be able to get a much improved K-series 1.8 engine as l understand that the faults were pretty much ironed out of it & the block was strengthened. Not that mine has given me a lot of problems, nothing that replacing an exhaust valve and re-seating the rest of the valves didn't cure.
Lotus also did a bit of work on it early on when they used it in their cars (not my specific engine of course).

I think if anyone did actually have 'the licence' to re-manufacture badges but chose not to then they would be fair game for anyone else.

Before wins Steve walker of S&G Walkers had them remade and he showed me the first batch in the early 90s.

What were Steve's like? Ian Wilsons were indistinguishable from the Rover original ones except for possibly being better.

I have a few bought of Flea bay and other places all non original ones from other suppliers and with out exception they are awful.

Here a link to the badges that Ian commisioned Another bonnet badge

Hello Clive,

Steve did indeed have them remade, and to the original specifications. I know as I purchased two from him during the early 1990s, or it may well have even been during the late 1980s?? I fitted one to my Rover a couple of years ago, the other is still brand new in the packaging that it arrived in.

Steve Walker's remanufactured badges were superb Graeme!

I have one of Ian's. I got it cheap as it had a small flaw - but I have never managed to find it. Excellent quality and still as good as new after erm.. I forget how long I've had it but it is a good while now.

Interesting about the longevity of the bonnet badges. In 1978 when my late father purchased what is now my Rover, the badge was already displaying noticeable signs of sun and heat damage. I replaced that badge on April 15, 1986, the Rover only having travelled 47,650 miles (76,717km). The replacement was a genuine Rover item purchased from a dealer in Sydney. That badge would last significantly better, indeed it wasn't until a couple of years ago that it was replaced. For over 20 years, the badge looked like new, so it would appear on the face of it that the materials from which the badge had been made were changed.

The badge below is an S & G Walker remanufactured item, purchased no later than the early 1990s. It has been on my Rover's bonnet for only 6 years having been fitted on April 11, 2013. Since fitting my Rover has travelled 115,000 miles (185,000km), hence ample exposure to heat, dust and UV radiation, and yet it looks as new.

I wonder when the classic car bubble will burst? Did it a while ago. Everyone seems to be charging silly dosh for parts and cars these days. Don't think it will last for ever?
Regards the badge job. I have a print shop so have vinyl printed a badge, laminated it with gloss and attached it to the old one. Looks fine, refuse to fork out daft money for a new one.
