Best way to refit Series 2 wheel discs/hubcaps?

I've placed this in Suspension/Steering because that's what the wheels are attached to…

With the two Series 1s I used to own, replacing the wheel discs was easy: just push them on. Too easy, perhaps, which was why they had a reputation for turning in situ and slicing the tyre valve, and for falling off under duress. The slightly glitzier Series 2 discs fit much more firmly, but what is the best way to fit them? Simply placing them centrally over the wheel and pushing achieves nothing, at least with the four on my car (1972 2000 TC). I've been using a leather-faced hammer to tap round the rim of the disc until it eventually seats all the way round, but it makes a noise like banging a dustbin lid which isn't appreciated when it's a late-night garage session. I'm sure there's an easier way. Any suggestions?

Thanks, John

Like the leather one (one end of a wire-wheel spinners hammer, the other end being copper) that I have been using, but quieter? I was wondering if there was some sort of magic push, hold and manipulate manoeuvre. The handbook is silent on the subject. Hammer it is, then.

I just bought one for a pound, to replace the one I lent out and never got back, which also cost me a pound.

Many years ago I stopped to help a gent in a Roller change a wheel. A mature gentleman with 2 sweet young things on board - nieces no doubt. Anyway, after I had some trouble getting the wheel trim back on, he said Stand back, and laid into it with his leather shod foot. That fixed it, in more ways than one.
