Be Alert

I thought that it might be of interest to you all. A couple of years ago, a guy who went under the name of "LANDYLOON" not to be confused with a genuine seller who also went under the same name, signed himself into the Opel Manta Owners Club, OMOC,and using the name "BLACKMANTACOUPE "posted in the forum that he had many Manta parts for sale, whatever members asked him for, he could supply, even in the colours they required, a lot of money changed hands, but there were no parts being delivered, I can't remember all the details now, but a few of the members tracked this guy down, and the police got involved, and as far as I know he was prosicuted, but no money was refunded, even PyPal refused to pay up, so I was told. Now last week I was perusing the OMOC forum, had a look in " Parts for sale" and lo and behold, there are posts identical to those of a couple of years ago, and some of the members were requesting this ,that, and the other,, and this guy was saying Yes, Ive got all these things that you require, alarm bells started ringing in my head, and I thought I'd better jog a few memories, although I couldn't be sure that this guy was on the take, so I just posted" Do any of you remember LANDYLOON?" and instead of sending money to this guy, they started asking where he lived, so that maybe they could call around and collect the parts etc, we haven't heard from him since, and all this happened over a week ago!! Now you are all thinking why are we being told all this? Well all I am aiming to do is to warn you to be alert, and be very careful when you send money for parts, to people you don't know, or have never heard of before,,there are so many con men/people out there today, and if this guy, or others can't pull it off on one club Forum, what's to stop them trying another club, like this one for example? Well I've had my say now!!!!!!! Best regards to you all.
Julian.

Thanks for the heads up Julian, we all need to be on the lookout for these scams. As much as ebay can be a pain in the neck, at least you have a certain amount of comeback if you buy and pay through paypal, certainly safer than just sending money to an unknown on a forum.

I just want to add that it is not that easy to get money back from PayPal when something goes wrong. You have to read all the small letters to understand fully their requirements and remember that time is very critical. You have to file in a claim i think at most 20 days from the payment, which usually is not enough as you often allow for some delay in the post. Reporting on ebay has nothing to do with this, and remember that you have to report straight on PayPal to see if you are eligible for a refund. (Guess how i found out...)

I recently bought a towbar from ebay & picked it up last night & also came away with some other very reasonably-priced parts. (Thanks for that Gino). You do have a fairly solid guarantee that the people doing it the official way are genuine though I don't use pay-pal as you hear too many bad news stories about it & there's the extra cost involved.

I've had issues with them just recently. I brought a head for my bike that turned out to be no good, the seller was very nice and refunded the money, including my postage. This was on the 3rd of April, that is they received the money from him on the 3rd. (he mailed me to say the money had left he's account) Only just got my money back Friday! 8 days to transfer to my pay pal account!!! Will be another 7 to transfer to my bank account!!!!!!

Sorry, off topic. :(
