Backlash and drivetrain clonk

Hi everyone

Recent bad running and epic electrical cut out resulting in full engine braking being applied suddenly and fearsomely and somewhat repeatedly has resulted in a bit of an increase in diff backlash and associated driveline shunting, which is quite unpleasant.

Is this rebuildable/fixable? What's causing it? I think it's mostly in the diff (UJ ans propshaft have no play)

I'm quite close to dropping the whole rear off as I've got a clonky de dion tube, leaking rear calipers, and some suspect rear lower bushes, plus I want to assess the elbows properly, so if it's a benchtop job that'd be another tick in that box for bringing the rear off.

Any advice? Tips tricks pitfalls all gratefully received :)

Don't forget that the diff mounting plate can crack and it's mountings fail as well, both or either of which will give your symptoms. If you're doing the tube and looking at the elbows as well as rebushing the lower arms then that could all come out as one lump without the diff and with or without the driveshafts, but dismantling on the bench can be a lot more difficult than doing it on the car, as the car holds everything still as you try to undo it.

Thanks Harvey.

I'll need to get my head right up into the diff area to check those then?

Might mend the sill first...
