Automatic Gearbox sloppy

Good afternoon,
I have just purchased a 3500 auto which has been standing for 5 years. The problem is when you select the gears it dose not click into position. I can push the gear leaver with my finger and it will move with no resistance.
Would this be a faulty immobiliser switch or something else.
I look forward for your comments and help.

Hi Bob, it's not so easy to give advice about the gearbox from afar.
Check whether there is enough oil in the gearbox.
If you still can't engage a gear, look under the car on the left-hand side of the gearbox and have someone move the gear lever.

Do you have to push the detent button on the gearlever to move it, or can you move it without?

I can move the gear lever without pushing the detent button thank you for replying.

That's where to start looking for your problem then.

Do you think it could be the spherical seat for the lever could have split and worn?

It could be, but you shouldn't be able to move the lever through it's full travel without pressing the detent button. I'd suggest taking it apart and seeing what's going on.
