Auto gearbox oil

Hi all, just had the old green goddess on the lift and fastened the sump on the auto box. No wonder we had a leak, all bolts a full turn loose. Seems to have cured it now and we have a good layer of rust protection on the floor pan behind the box!! Previous owner must have kept it topped up though as I did check it before our first test run. Assume it is checked with engine running? Anyone know the spec of oil? Would have thought ATF rather than ATF Dexron. We have both on the shelf. Not sure about these 'universal' one fits all types, though we do keep that for the farmers. Level is OK at the moment, just wondered for future changes etc. though I would think it has been changing itself! Cheers.

All you need to know.

BW35/65 Checklist.

On the subject of universal ATF, I saw some for sale that met both M2C-33F/G, and Dexron specifications. How the F... does that work then?

oil specs can be strange, at work i stock about 17 different oils, the variations and differing combinations of specs on them are bewildering, some times the difference is merely whether that particular oil has been certified for a spec, and sometimes its about additives.

i have oils which are ok to put in a ford, but not ok to put in a same age peugoet with an identical engine and identical service schedule!

I can understand that, but how can one oil have friction modifiers, and at the same time, not have friction modifiers?

Do you have milk in your black coffee?

As the guy above said, engine oils these days are a nightmare. We used to stock around 4 grades a few years back, now it's 14 and we don't have half of them. According to the oil reps it's mainly the diesel oils which are different depending how dirty the motor is. Mercs and Fords are really sooty engines apparently. Put the wrong oil in and it soots up, clogs the pick up filter and the engine is toast. Petrols aren't too bad, the really thin oils are just for economy on the emissions tests on new cars to get the readings down and they will run on most any grade. The latest BMW V8 motors run a 10w60 which is what we use in our race engines. As for the transmission oils, they are about as bad which is why I asked the question. Think I will use the ATF with the correct spec. If I recall from the old days the Dexrons were mostly in GM cars. My old Merc auto had a special grade in it. As for the multipurpose one which theoretically does both? will leave that one for the farmers and their tractors.

took out the dip stick on my P6 auto there is a low line I see and the words CHECK COLD

the oil comes up over the low level and half way across the words CHECK COLD but there is no max line
