Auto box problem

Hi, all,

As it's been a nice day here in the north west decided to take Charlotte out for a run before tucking her up for the winter, all went well round Lytham and Blackpool until we turned onto the docks in Preston and we heard a screeching sound. Carried on with no problems until we reached a bit of an incline, engine revs increased but speed didn't, exactly like a slipping clutch. Fluid level is good, it looks perhaps a little pale with no "bad" smell, sets off ok in first and reverse so I'm guessing a major rebuild is now on the horizon? Any (very) rough idea how much it may be?

Cheers,

Mick

I'd roadtest again to try to ascertain exactly what is happening and when before convincing yourself it needs an overhaul, but the price to overhaul varies according to who is doing the job, and whether it's to overhaul a loose box, or a complete remove/overhaul/refit.

Cheers, Harvey, I'll have another look tomorrow. I'll go to my local motor factors and pick up some ATF, fingers crosssed it's ok!

Hi, Harvey, went and eventually managed to find some suitable fluid ("what's your reg number, computer says no...), topped it up and set forth, unfortunately same thing happened when it went into second, graunching noise and revs rising but no increase in speed. Stopped, selected 2 and set off, same thing happened. I had noticed that it's been less inclined to "creep" recently, should have realised then there may have been a problem lurking.

If the problem is with SECOND gear only then it's a front band or front servo problem. You can adjust the servo with the box in the car, and if it needs resealing because one of the seals has failed then that can be done without removing the box as well. But if the band itself needs replacing then the box will have to come out to do it.

Tried it again this morning, seems to be slipping in first now, although reverse still seems ok. Been quoted £1050 +vat to remove, recon and install by local firm, think I'm going to have to leave it until next year. Just when you think it's running well.......

If it's slipping in first in "D" but not in "1" then it could be a one way clutch fault, but as you said you had problems in second as well then it's most likely a front clutch failure.

If it's done properly, (and unless you stand and watch, which is never going to happen, you have to take it on trust) then I'd say that was pretty much right on the money.

Latest update, had to back her out to get something from the garage roof space, no problem getting out but no drive at all going forward and no noise of slipping, I hope that doesn't mean it's now become unrepairable?

Did you do any more about your gearbox ?

Mine seems to be doing the same , it was fine ( although slight slip when cornering ) , until the other week when it wouldn't do anything in first ,second or drive ( reverse ok ) , oil very low so topped up with correct stuff , took for test drive today , drove a few miles , changed up ok , bit slow into top gear and slight slip , then going along and wouldn't accelerate , just managed to limp home in first , reverse fine . Front clutch do we think ? ( I'm no mechanic but just reading other problems people have had ) , expensive job ????

Loss of all forward drive is normally a failed front clutch. To repair that the box has to be removed, the sump, valve block, front pump & front clutch drum have to be removed, to dismantle the front clutch and replace the seals and clutch plates, but once you're that far in it's a bit short sighted not to check everything else as well.

Just got car back, what a transformation! It seems some bearing had given up and some piston or other. Now, can't even feel the changes, so smooth and feels a lot quicker. And the sun is still shining!
