Australian members - BW35 tough bits?

Try reading the label on the side. If its an Aussie box itll have it written on the label. They used BW35 in taxis for years but they were rebuilt with the 65 gearset and clutches. The Aus boxes also went behind valiant engines so were built much tougher than the euro and US versions. Borg warner used to rebuild them that way whenever a car came in (like mine) where the bands had worn out and scored the drums

Taxis in the UK had a BW40, and I never saw any differences from the 35 that I can remember. The BW65 front clutch is actually more prone to failure than the BW35 one, as it has the anti-bump in it which complicates it. The 65 is a more reliable box in service than the 35, but most of that is nothing to do with the clutches and drums IMHO. I've heard a lot about the HD parts used in the Aus BW35, but I've only seen the rear servo with the extra mounting, which must help, but the clutches are the same size, as bigger diameter drums to accomodate larger diameter clutches wouldn't fit in the casing, and more clutches of the same size would make the drums to long too fit in the casing as well. I've waited for a long time to be shown these parts in-situ, but it hasn't happened yet.

Here's a question; what would be stronger - a standard 65 or 'built-up' aussie 35?

If it was me I'd build the BW65 to 66 spec, and fit a BW35 front drum in it to do away with the anti-bump. Back in the day front and rear clutch friction plates used to be different, the rear being HD, so we used to fit the rears into the front as well, just to beef up the front clutch a bit, but now the friction plates you buy are all the same.
