Aspiring series 2 TC (or possibly 3500) owner in the UK saying hi

After several years living in central Lancaster thinking how nice it would be to have secure and dry storage and thus the opportunity to get a nice old car to keep the daily anonymous Japanese tank company, I finally found a garage last November. In terms of filling that garage, the p6 series 2 has always been high on my list of contenders. 15 years ago I actually considered getting a 2200TC to use as my daily driver. In retrospect I am happy I didn't do it, because although I'm sure the car would have coped better than most cars of a similar age, I lived in Liverpool at the time, did around 18K miles per year, and didn't have a garage either.

My situation has changed for the better; my quest for a good p6, on the other hand, has so far not gone too well. I have been keeping a close watch on places like C&C and eBay, and looking back I think I may have lost out on one or two opportunities to get a nice car at a fair price because of my busy work schedule, which means I can normally only travel in weekends, and even then I am sometimes away for work.

I suppose one reason for joining this forum is to see whether it might help me find a solid car. If anyone knows of any, or may be considering selling theirs, do please let me know, either in this thread or via PM. It's great to see how active the Club is in organising events; I would definitely want to participate in and contribute to those, and in the process pass on my pathological obsession with old cars to my little boys, who at the ages of 2 and 4 are both already showing promising signs of being infected, excitedly pointing out classic cars to me wherever we go!

When you say "the Club", there are actually three that cater to the P6. This page is also an independent page, not associated with any of them.

The P6 Rover Owners Club is the oldest and biggest of the P6 clubs, catering for a wide range of people

The P6 Club is the tiny offshoot, and the Rover Sports Register, has a small P6 following

Thanks very much chrisw, it's useful for me to get a sense of relative sizes.

I suppose I'd assumed this forum was linked to the P6 Club, because their main page appears to suggest this (The Rover P6 Club). Well, on re-reading the relevant sentence on that page, I guess that it doesn't really claim that the forum belongs to the Club, but that's how I initially interpreted it.

The P6 ROC I've come across as well, but unless I've missed it that doesn't seem to have an online forum, which I find a little surprising given its size.

The Rover Sports Register I'd not yet heard of, but I'll have a look.

Hi, as Chris says there are 3 main clubs. The 2 p6 ones are both decent and should give you what you want. The roc is the bigger I believe, by how much I'm not sure, but the p6 club has a bigger online presence which can be useful.

WE generally don't encourage discussion of the 2 clubs on here due to the political nature of clubs, but would suggest you contact both. Whether the club has meets or groups local to you is a good starting point in terms of your enquiries.

Good luck and hope you find which is best for you and most importantly welcome to the classic rover forum
:)

To be clear this forum is independent of any club. There is history and politics to the 2 clubs so it's best that way IMHO :) the p6 club advertise this forum as a courtesy. This forum was actually originally spawned from the ROC club I believe but I wasn't around then. Hope that clarifies things?

Thanks very much rockdemon, that's really helpful. Needless to say I wasn't aware of any politics, and have zero intention of engaging in that. I'm really just interested in these wonderful cars. I was at Classic Cars in the Park in Hutton-in-the-Forest today (16th Classic Cars in the Park | Mark Woodward Classic Events), hoping to see a (series 2) P6 to show my wife and little boys what I'm obsessing over :) It was a nice show in a great location, with the weather gods smiling down on us as well, but alas no P6. Better luck, I hope, in Tatton Park (Cheshire Auto Promotions :: Classic Car Shows) next weekend!

There are a couple of s2 p6s for sale on the p6 club facebook page at the moment... might be worth you checking those out, one that needs engine work, one that needs tlc to the paintwork. At 2.5 asking price neither are expensive for what they are... unless you want a 100% perfect and want o pay the premium of course.

my understanding is that the two rover clubs came about as a political and economic. argument caused the original ( one) rover P6 club? to. divide .one becomes rover owners club .other the rover p6 club. ( pity as a one club scene would be so much more useful to all)
this site is indeed independent. good luck with search for your pride and joy.DO read articles club shows online as to what to look for in this car ( under rear seats. etc and note outer sill is only. screwed on and NOT welded ) many on this site are very good at offering advise . a few experts too such as famed Harvey.
only had mine coming up to 3 years now ( p6b ) and still fighting its. wish to give issues. ..such is the joy? of owning one. ( well this one ) ,the car itself. will get many. onlookers. many of whom appreciate its being the last real rover ( before it was taken over and became a badge) produced.
DO get one with pas . or you will need a lot of spinach like Popeye ..(. don't ask how I know ) better off getting half decent one too that has history and servicing. ( mine had been off road for 13 years ..) 2200tc is almost as fast as the 3500 though the. 3500S is best if we want to drive with vigour .
only. issue is ever aware of apart from the normal P6 ones ..was that 22ootc were prone to head. gasket failures when driven. long high speeds such as motorways .( my friend had one many many years ago )

Thanks very much classicalgreen; all very helpful advice. When you say high speeds, do you mean just 70mph or significantly more than that?

Thank you also rockdemon for mentioning the FB page. I wasn't aware of its existence! I have just joined. Those cars do indeed sound reasonably priced but I am really looking for one that doesn't require work. Am in no great rush: the hunt is of a lot of fun in its own right, and having had to spend so long acquiring a garage it would make no sense for me now to rush into buying something to fill that garage that isn't exactly what I am after.
