Any Tests

Just bought a type 35 gearbox off ebay. Listed for 20p but that would have been an insult so contacted the seller to beat him down....no sorry...asked him what he would take for it. Paid a tenner. (i'm a big softy with a sense of fair play)
So. Is there any checks i can do to see how good it is before fitting it or is it a case of fitting it and then swearing retrospectivley when it doesn't work?

There's not a great deal you can do, removing the sump and looking inside might give you a better idea of fluid condition, and if you knew what you were looking at you might notice something that was wrong or faulty or worn out.If you don't know what you're looking for it won't really help. What is the series number, (on the data plate on the side of the box) that will give you some idea of the age of the car the box came out of, but not its condition.
You will end up fitting it and sorting out the problems after.
My advice would be, if it's a 303 series box, pay to get it overhauled, then fit it to replace you box, safe in the knowledge that it's OK. (Providing it's been done properly of course.......)
