Anti theft device

My p6 has an alarm. it occasionally stops you starting it and has mystery wiring. not good. my fave security device is removing the coil lead when parking anywhere a bit dodgy....

My P6 has an alarm. I'd like to fit a tracker if I was taking it to uni with me next year, but it's probably better that it stays at home, nice and safe. As rockdemon says, removing the coil lead is very effective.

I have a hidden switch that shuts off the ignition,...but i'm not telling you where

I've also been known to remove the rotor arm on more than one occasion,..

That used to be a regular trick on our mates cars at shows back in the day

WHS.
Except for the crocodile on the rear seats & the tiger in the boot. I used to have them the other way round but the tiger kept sharpening her claws on the seats. Lousy tigers!!!!!

Me too - I found it when I stripped Sparky down. Took me a while to work out what it was for and there is no way I would have found it with him on one piece.

I also have a Disklok fitted to the steering wheel. You can see it in this picture.

I use a steering wheel lock although I have never gone so far as to remove the steering wheel altogether in the style of Mr Bean.

I used to take the steering wheel off and stuff it down the front of my trousers to keep it safe. But I had to to doing that because it was driving me nuts!

Ok ok, I am getting my coat

did you ever think maybe everyone on the thread is misleading you RE their security precautions

Removing the rotor arm must be about the cheapest and most effective precaution. Assuming your average car thief is below a ceratin age, they won't even know what a distrubuotor or rotor arm is. Even if they do, what's the chances that they have the right type of arm with them anyway? Even if the do have an arm, will they know the bonnet release is in the driver's glovebox to open the bonnet and get at the engine? Then they would perhaps not realise they need to pull the choke out to start the car (and you would hear them cranking the engine over over for 5 min. till the battery was dead   ).

In case your thinking that I have foolishly explained how to nick a P6. I haven't mentioned the #??#&&!!! or even the ''::?/£&*! built in security devices.

Unless soemone's nicking your car because they specialise in classic "removals", aforementioned thieves below a certain age won't be interested in nicking an "old codger's motor" :D :D

When i took PAE to a local garage they couldnt work out how to start it with the key being in the middle of the dash!

When the builders had to move Sparky, they tried to start him for a few minutes then gave up and pushed him out of the door. The complained to my wife that he had 2 ignition keys

I discovered that they were trying to start it with the drivers knee bin key - and I trusted them to build a garage!

Good old Practically carsick magazine did an article a couple of years ago using an old mobile phone wired in to the battery via its car charger lead. This can be set to silent mode and hidden somewhere in the car when you need it. There are internet websites who will locate your phone for a small fee if you need it, hey presto, cheap tracker. Sounds a bit heath robinson, but it isn't a permanent installation, and most phones can be tracked to within 150 feet allegedly. Handy if your pride and joy goes missing. Not convinced though... :?

if anyone saw top gear recently with the 3 bmw convertibles, well my p6 has an identical alarm/immobiliser to the troublesome one on richard hammonds car!
yes it is as big a pain in the arse as it was for him!

My dad had the same sigma alarm in hia old BMW 520 and it dint work when new. BMW sytner tried to fix it 3 times and eventually bypassed it for him....

My car came with a gear lever to handbrake lock which I found in the boot (I wondered why it had a collar on the gearstick). It looks ok a period extra, as a crime prevention device it is about as much use as a walking stick with a castor on the bottom. I intend to wire in a simple immobiliser somewhere, until then, if I park anywhere of concern, I'll leave the wife in it.
