P6s at the Case is Altered - North West London (and Southern Herts and Bucks) Regional Group of the Rover P6 Club – Annual Report – 16 November 2010

In December 2009 it seemed a good idea to start a P6 get-together somewhere near Pinner in the London Borough of Harrow. Mainly because that is where I live!

The original plan was to have the first meeting in March 2010 as that left plenty of time to advertise in a couple of P6 Car Club magazines, on the Classic Rover Forum, and put a flyer on every stationary P6 that was passed. In the event the process took much longer and on 26 February although the venue had been decided and agreed with the landlord I took the decision to delay the date of the first meeting until the second Tuesday in May for various reasons including the weather. This would allow adequate advertising to have been completed, my own P6 would be back on the road and hopefully we would start off with a good turnout.

An open invitation had been put out to anyone to come along. Hopefully it will be a success and become a regular thing.

On Wednesday 12 May it was marvellous to hear “Good turnout last night - the pub is very busy so we couldn't get the cars all together, but there were six in total.” We would have had 7 if Barry’s starter motor had not packed up! Six P6s had turned up and a further 3 p6ers came along without their cars as these were under repair. Amongst the attendees Julian and Derek brought their P6s from Radlett in Hertfordshire, Dave came from Hayes in Middlesex, David and Dorothy came from Colindale and Nick from Godalming in Surrey.

The problem now was to ensure we kept the momentum going and increased our membership beyond nine so we get a reasonable turnout even if some p6ers do not come every time or it is cold and wet in the winter. A flyer was produced containing local rallies and other interesting events as well as the dates of future meetings. As well as posting it on the internet members agreed to take a copy and put it on any P6s they passed. Photos were put on the internet to show others who might come along the nice location both inside and outside the pub.

Our second get-together was held on Tuesday 13 July. Would the P6ers come to the Case is Altered again? I went along with some trepidation but cars and people came. I must say a big thank you to all those who came to the inaugral get-together in May and to those who attended the second get-together there on 13 July. We now had 11 members. Two new attendees, namely Eric and David. We actually had 3 new P6s there as Barry's car was now back on the road and highly polished!

It seemed important to risk bombarding P6ers with further e-mails and to put out a short e-mail newsletter to all those who had come along to any of our meetings before the next and subsequent meetings to ensure the momentum continued. Someone reminded me just in time that this should go blind copy to protect e-mail addresses and if a P6er does not have another P6ers contact details they should contact me at my P6 e-mail address and I could forward the message on.

It was also important to record that at our Case is Altered get-together in July I had mentioned that the P6 Club had asked me if we would like to become their regional group for North West London (and Southern Herts, Bucks). Those present discussed this and unanimously decided to go ahead. So we became the official regional group for the P6 Club and attendees gain by being covered by the P6 Club liability insurance whilst at get-togethers. But our meetings are still an open invitation and everyone is welcome to come to them whether they belong to the P6 Club, another P6 Club, another Classic Car Club or no Club at all.

On Sunday 18 July Alec organised a superb stand at the Uxbridge Auto Show which was oversubscribed! He had room for a maximum of 17 cars but I suspect there were more like 20 P6s there. It was a marvellous day out and extremely well done by Alec who even made his own superb Rover P6 Club banners.

On Wednesday 4 August we had an outing to the 9th Classics on the Green near Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire and despite the heavy rain had a wonderful turnout. Several P6ers had lunch in the superb Artichoke pub on the Green. From 2pm until it got dark P6ers came to the Rover P6 Club stand in two shifts. Everyone who said they would come in their P6 turned up as well as two more P6's than the ten we were expecting. Twelve P6's -nine v8's including two series 1 cars and three 4 cylinder cars of which one was a series 1 car turned up so we had twelve cars and 19 people in total. I borrowed Alec’s Rover P6 Club Banners for the evening shift so everyone arriving late could find us and slot into the places left by the cars that left at the end of the afternoon. We also increased our membership to 13.

Grimv8 wrote afterwards hat he was gutted he didn't make it. The rain lashed down just before he’d planned to leave on his motorbike and foiled his plans . What a shame he was not coming in his V8. After all it has a roof!

On Sunday 15 August a few of us went down to the Cranleigh Lions Classic Car Show at Cranleigh, Surrey where the West London Branch of the P6 Rover Club had organised a very succesful Southern Rally.

Unfortunately I was the only P6er from the Case is Altered who managed to get to the Rover P6 Club's National Rally at Rugeley on Sunday 26 September. However I managed to tag onto 3 sociable and slow moving V8’s at Oxford Services on the M40 and we convoyed up the M40 and M6 together.

Since the Summer came to an end we have met twice on 14 September and 9 November and have increased our membership to 15.

On Saturday 6 November Alec went along to Regent Street to see the vintage cars which were on display there a day before the London to Brighton run. This is an annual event during which Regent Street is closed to traffic. He says it is really good and I think some of us should join him next year.

Tuesday 9 November was a cold wintry day and we spent the evening inside the Case is Altered. 9 p6ers turned up but due to the inclement weather and cars off the road for winter time improvements the majority found it better to come in their other car. I can now see why the word “drivers” was removed from the Club title! Interest was shown in an outing to Brooklands and it was decided to possibly go there in either the first 2 weeks of March or the first 2 weeks in April and to discuss a date when we meet in the New Year.

Our next event is the Branch Christmas Dinner on Tuesday 14 December. I booked a table for 10 but amazingly the numbers have now increased to 17 despite the need for a deposit upfront! The good news is that James, the Landlord says he will be able to fit us all in.

Our next get-together after the Christmas Dinner is at 8pm on Tuesday 11 January 2011 and then on the second Tuesday of every odd month thereafter.

Alec will be arranging the club stand at Uxbridge Auto Show in July 2011 and I will arrange a club stand at the 10th Classics on the Green Classic Car Show near Rickmansworth on the first Wednesday in August. If there is enough interest we will also arrange an outing to the Woburn Rally in August 2011.

I am looking at probably arranging local outings to Brooklands in March or April and possibly a visit to the London Motor Museum near Hayes later in the Spring. We may see if we can go together with the Rover Sports Register to make up the numbers.

 We are near the M1, M40 and M25 , southern Herts and Bucks, North and North West London. So if you are in the area do come along to meet the p6ers at the Case is Altered High Road, Eastcote, Pinner, Middlesex at 8pm on the second Tuesday of any odd month.

Best Wishes
